SURIN – The Thai army responded to concerns over a cycling event at the Ta Muen Thom Temple, near the Cambodian border, clarifying that the activity was a planned tourism promotion by Surin Province.

On 22nd June 2025, an official statement addressed Cambodia’s concerns regarding a Thai military-led cycling tour of Ta Muen Thom Temple before official opening hours.

The Thai army confirmed the event, part of the “Cycle to Two Temples, Taste Elephant Durian @Phanom Dong Rak 2025” organised by Surin’s Tourism and Sports Office, was pre-coordinated with Cambodian authorities the day prior, with Cambodian officials present during the visit.

The spokesperson emphasised the site is within Thai territory, and all protocols were observed. The misunderstanding might have stemmed from internal communication issues within Cambodia's military and government, leading to the perceived lapse.

Regarding the closure of the Chong Sai Takoo trade checkpoint, the army explained it was a security measure in response to increased Cambodian military presence along the border, prioritising local safety. This aligns with Thai government policy and border management strategies.
