In a troubling development, over 50 first-year students from Songkhla have been caught in an accommodation scam. A local landlord allegedly double-booked rooms and withheld deposits, leaving many without a place to stay as the new semester began.

 

Most students targeted are from Songkhla Rajabhat University. They discovered the seemingly ideal lodgings on Facebook. The building in question is a two-storey establishment with only four operational rooms on the ground floor; the upper level remains unusable. An adjacent three-storey structure offered additional accommodation but also proved problematic.

 

One student, studying economics and business administration, shared her ordeal. After spotting the landlord’s advertisement, she made contact via LINE and visited on 1st June. Despite doubts about the top floor's condition, its close proximity to campus convinced her to pay the 5,000 baht fee. On returning 9th June, she found her room occupied, leading to a temporary hotel stay. By 12th June, she met fellow victims.

 

A male communication arts student recounted a similar scenario. He, too, found his booked room occupied after paying an identical deposit. During orientation, word spread quickly, with many attendees revealing similar fates. This collective realisation led them to lodge a formal complaint at Songkhla City Police Station.

 

Another former tenant described unresolved maintenance issues from three years ago. Despite repeated repair promises, he left without his deposit or the returns from a failed 60,000 baht investment with the owner.

 

In response, Songkhla Rajabhat University stepped in, offering temporary lodgings to displaced students. While approximately ten have taken this offer, others are now relying on friends or seeking new accommodation.

 

Attempts to contact the landlord were unsuccessful. She reportedly denied wrongdoing in a private LINE message, claiming all deposits were refunded and expressing a wish to resolve any issues, though without acknowledging the double-booking.

 

Police Colonel Chamlom Suwalak confirmed that a thorough investigation is active. Officials are assembling evidence to bring charges where necessary, aiming for swift justice in this distressing case.
