The Muang Khon Kaen Police Station has earned international acclaim after being awarded the “World Smart City 2025 Award” in the Smart Security/Smart Safety category. The honour comes with a prize of 10 million baht, granted by the South Korean government, in recognition of the station’s innovative use of artificial intelligence in its citywide CCTV security system.

At 08:45 on 30 June, Mr Park Yongmin, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Thailand, paid an official visit to Khon Kaen Police Station to personally congratulate the team. He was welcomed by senior local officials including Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen Mr Phanthep Saokosol, Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Anuwat Suwannaphum, Muang Khon Kaen District Chief Mr Chinnakorn Kaenkhong, and Khon Kaen Mayor Mr Prasit Thongthangthai. Also in attendance were senior police officers, faculty members from Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and representatives from other relevant sectors.

During the visit, police presented details of their Smart City initiative, which played a key role in securing the international award. The winning project, developed in partnership with Piaspace Co., Ltd., employs state-of-the-art AI-driven CCTV technology to enhance public safety and traffic management across the city.

The system includes the installation of 50 intelligent CCTV camerascapable of detecting and analysing five specific high-risk behaviours in real time:

• Possession of firearms or knives

• Physical assaults or fights

• Incidents involving injured or collapsed persons

• Outbreaks of fire

• Failure to wear motorcycle helmets

Once detected, the AI system automatically alerts the Central Command and Operations Centre (CCOC) at Khon Kaen Police Station, enabling officers to respond immediately to potential threats or emergencies.

The software installation phase began in early June 2025 and is expected to be fully operational by November 2025. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance urban safety and develop Khon Kaen into a model smart city in Southeast Asia.

Khon Kaen Police and their partners are scheduled to formally receive the award at a ceremony in Busan, South Korea, on 16 July 2025, hosted by the South Korean government.

The project was selected from among entries submitted by 35 countries, showcasing Thailand’s growing leadership in the application of smart technologies for public service and community welfare.
