Two crucial issues are raised:

- an independent European nuclear protection.

- the (leading?) role of Germany- and also the role of other countries (as Germany currently has no own nuclear weapon).

“We should have a debate about an independent European nuclear umbrella, and that will only work with German leadership,” Jens Spahn, the conservatives' parliamentary group leader told German newspaper Welt. “If you can't provide a nuclear deterrent, you become a pawn in world politics.”

Oh great , the fourth reich.

Now with a government that wants to ban it's opposition , and with future nukes.

Ready to fight those Russian ghosts .

Backed by the euro elites and WEF.

No doubt stealing their citizens money to do so.

AFAIR the EU is protected by the independent UK, independent French and the independent US nuclear "umbrella".

I certainly wouldn't trust the USA under Trump at the moment, and I am not sure how far I would trust the French either.

If the EU were to get its own independent nuclear deterrent, which country or countries would control it or would it take a consensus to release it. By which time it would most probably be too late to be of any use.

The UK’s nuclear deterrent isn’t entirely ’independent’ it relies on leased (rented) US missiles, US warheads, technology and subs with questionable reliability.

That sums it up!

Nukes can only be countries' own weapons. The reason is that the one who sends nukes is the one who will be struck by nukes in retaliation. Will France or UK accept to be nuked in order to defend another country such as Germany, I doubt it.

And as you mentioned, the EU is unlikely to react quickly as it is not a Federal state and there's no one with executive power. Defense is also currently not a prerogative of the EU. For both reasons evoked, it would require a new major treaty. I also doubt it will happen.

The only solution would be nuclear proliferation in Europe, with the French transferring their independent technology to other countries, such as Germany or Poland. Of course, France is likely to negotiate something else in exchange.

German conservative leader

Lol, Jens Spahn, isn't he the guy who bought a house worth several million Euro with his husband, with a loan from the bank where he was on the board of directors?

He was the health minister until he was sidelined.

If he's spearheading the nuclear drive, it's surely doomed for failure.

His comment may not be the wisest, but it raises a relevant issue.

If the US withdraws its nuclear protection, should it be replaced, and by what?

Obviously Germany needs to nuke up, but Spahn is just giving off hot air. He has no power at all to decide anything.

The usual problem in Germany, those in power do not want to take action, those who do have no power.
