Check your hospital bill

I recently made an appointment in Chiang Mai for a cystoscopy. Private hospital.

Signed a form stating a deposit of 100% was required for the procedure - 17,000 baht for the surgery, 5000 baht for post-op pathology.

Paid up at the cashier. 22,000 baht. Deposit receipt issued.

After the procedure, 30 minutes recovery. Then conducted to the cashier again, where I am presented with a bill for 34,000 baht, including an item of 10,000 baht for "specialist OR equipment".

Naturally, I disputed the bill. After some to and fro, I said I signed a form that stated the deposit was payment in full for the procedure, 22,000 baht. Please show me a form I signed, which agreed to pay 34,000 baht.

Several phone calls follow. Profuse apologies, it is a system error. My opinion - someone is trying it on. I get a paid receipt to add to my "deposit" receipt.

Postscript - I get an email from the cashier stating I have been overcharged 2095 baht on the original bill, the hospital will credit my card in the next 30-60 days.

Hmmmm.

IME public hospitals are just as good as private ones when it comes to emergency admissions.

I used the private hospital after my elective surgery in a government hospital was deferred for a fortnight, then for another month after that.

The public hospital included a blood test and X'ray along with the cystoscopy, which IMO cast doubt on the competence of the urologist.

There's different levels of government hospitals. Some are busy, some are not. I just happen to live where they are not.

I use public hospital for everyday things, but you have to consider carefully outcomes.

Yesterday a Thai friend across the road went to the local hospital for woman's problems and had to go to a major centre (Kalasin) for a biopsy up the tunnel, which they knocked her out for the procedure. Has to go back in a week for results.

My wife had a problem awhile ago, but at the private hospital they just stuck a camera up there to have a look, no knock out no drama.

Who knows if there is cancer, if a biopsy would spread the cancer, camera not the same risk.
