when I came to thailand in the eighties if you saw a fat thai you would stop and stare it was pretty rare.

Still remember when they opened up that donut shop in the tesco in udon, must have been early 2000,s

all those slim girls all lined up for their donuts-I called it then, that they were going to get fat (and they did)

and the scrawny kids back then couldnt afford candy so all they had was chewing on a bit of sugar cane.probobly burn more calories trying  to eat it than they got

out of it.

sugar is the number 1 culprit (white death)

torched more than one relative here for diabetes

Thais rarely exercise. They ride motorbikes everywhere. More sugar and breads everywhere.

They don't understand what's unhealthy, i ask them, they often think rice, when they've been slim for 1000 years on rice.   Obesity and 7 Eleven growth probably very similar on a graph

  • It's probably the ultra processed food that hijacks the brain at a very young age. It's really a worldwide problem where the cheapest food available is the worst for their health.   I was in

Donuts are bread and sugar. Its not just sugar. Bread makes you fat. A guy was held hostage in the middle east and lived on bread and water. When he was released he was more fat from the bread and no exercise.

Sugar is a big culprit here, no question. Thais put it in most cooked foods and it's obviously in all the processed product food also.

Obesity here is nowhere near as a lot of other (Western) countries, but the levels of diabetes here is worrying. Thais enjoy 'snacking' between meals, contributing to insulin and blood sugar levels that are off the charts.

Just like most commoners, you seem to not grasp the true meaning of the Exponential Function.

IF, as you say, there were an exponential increase in weight gain here in Thailand, among the populace...then....

You would be lost under a great mass of blubber...which...I think....

You already are.

You need to go back to school, and learn more about exponential growth, before making such a bald statement.

Here is what exponential growth looks like.....

Don't forget the fat in doughnuts which accounts for about 50% of the calories

53%..................that surprised me a little - I would have had carbs as the main culprit.

Deep fried garbage and fat is more calorie dense

Donuts are nice though

The big problem in Phuket the Thai kids have to much money, most mornings I go for a walk and go down the beach, maybe go to 7/11 you see the school kids buying all the junk, I see one kid regular getting pizza slices for his breakfast and some fizzy drink, he's a big lump already, his mother has he fair share,

My niece who lives in Korat came here to Phuket for a few days holiday she has developed a liking for cheese, so all the cheese toasties in 7/11 are her favourite, when she come to my house and we have some proper cheese, at the moment she's tall and slim, I have to tell her cut it down,

Where she live there is no Starbucks, one morning we took her to the one we have near home for breakfast, we let have a cheese toasties, it's really nice like triple strong cheese sandwich, I said to her after your holiday you need to cut that down, I know she went home telling her mother, Uncle took me to Starbucks and let me have what I wanted, Special offer has finished until next year we told her.

Silly question.

If not caused by health issues (eg diabetes) it's related to

Food intake.

Here's to mention first hand sugar.

Alcohol is another obstacle combined with "empty calories".

Um, can the op provide proof of this "exponential" increase.

This is easy!

Not eating enough nutritional food - in other words poor diet choices.

Doing no exercise!

Little pride in ones appearance

But all good for big Pharma!

Probably the same in the UK

Fast food and no exercise

Plus looking at their I-phones

"Thai food has always included plenty of sugar and deep-fried options, so that’s not new. Is it more dairy, cakes, and sweet drinks creeping into the average diet? "

This is 90 pct of the problem.  It starts with the sweet stands outside the school gates and goes from there. Plus fast food everywhere. Yes Thais have always had a sweet tooth, that's not the underlying cause, they love to eat regularly all day, that's always been the way, but its mainly food choices that are making a fat nation.

McDonald’s and all the other fast food chains are to Blame 20 years ago hou never saw a fat Thai in 2025 there are 1,000s of them filling there bellies with all the fast food garbage up x
