Easy to say until one of them drives through a red light and runs into you and you wake up (hopefully you do wake up), with broken bones, a head injury and can't remember who you are, all because they were in a rush to cross the road to buy some Somtam. 60 dying every single day, leaving children behind or in temple burns, isn't and has never been a joke. Western influence has given these people the majority of what they have and use daily, but they neglected the influence law enforcement and proper education should have on their driving ability.

Why are you here ? Go to the west with the rest of your pussy footing white knuckling karen drivers.

118 people die every day in the US in road accidents. 50 people a day die in road accidents in Thailand per day. The US has 4+ times the people but Thailand has more than double the registered motorcycles on the road. (8 million vs 21 million) So with all those nanny state laws and regulations , all that alleged education and higher IQ , and that is still the relative number of road deaths in the US ? Really ?

Thai people who don't wear helmets are taking a calculated risk. They fully understand that having a composite thing with padding in it over their head, would be safer if they happened to get in an accident. This seems to be lost on the education , IQ and enlightenment people.

Thai people and even some European people drive more in line with the human condition.

It is the Anglo countries and North America specifically, that has the most cringe worthy , slow and pathetic drivers. And these slow and pathetic drivers are more distracted because the slower you go, the more opportunity it gives you to get distracted with other things.

I'm only here until I can re-establish back home with my daughter.

Yes, there are bad drivers in the US, but not like here. Laws are enforced in the US, with stiff penalties for people breaking them, and the police are a lot less likely to be bribed.

People mostly die in the US from drunk driving and texting, just like here. Thailand has lead the world in daily road deaths per capita , or in the top 3, for a very long time, and the thing about that, is that it might never change, as rules here mean very little compared to the US. When you have millions more on the roads, there of course will be more accidents and road rage, texting and accidents.

Nanny state laws might be that way to you, but it does save a lot of lives. Fact remains, people here are a lot worse drivers, with more incompetence and reckless behavior, and seeing most are on scooters, that's why so many die daily. Not wearing a helmet isn't a calculated risk. It's not thinking of the consequences and plainly acting carelessly, especially where passengers, including infants, is concerned.

You'll never see anyone in the US on a motorbike with 3-4 passengers, with infants, driving without helmets. More than one passenger, you won't drive 5 miles without getting pulled over and receiving a ticket, and more if there are laws regarding wearing helmets, which are mandatory for children. Only three states have no laws regarding helmets, the rest having age specific laws. Up to you if you don't wear a helmet, but when your time comes, you'd have wish you did, and that could come today.

Slow drivers in the US? Have you ever been there? Driving skills are far better there than here. The problem lies in arrogance and texting while driving. You take that away you take away a majority of accidents anywhere.

I'll never understand why all the karens in this thread ever come back to Thailand if they are so outraged about the way they drive. I really get a kick out of the way Thai people drive and ride. It is part of the reason why I liked Thailand and wanted to come back.

If you want some boring nanny state where everyone drives like karens, then stay home.

Work on your trolling skills: this is so obviously an attempt to get us to point out how stupid you are is silly. Also, you need to learn what a 'karen' is in current slang. Has nothing to do with driving

Ironically, four Police sub-stations on Jomtien Beach Rd. between Dongtan Beach and Soi Chiyaphreuk and never once have I seen any police officer emerge and flag any kind of traffic offender.

I have nothing new to add but I just don't understand the way Thais drive.

Is it a million vehicle game of chicken?

Is it just optimism?

I just don't get how so many drivers can drive so badly with no foresight and apparently no sense of self-preservation.

So you're saying you don't notice anything different about Thai driving culture?

"Key Issues:
  • High Fatality Rates:
Thailand has one of the highest road traffic death rates in the world, particularly among vulnerable road users like motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

  • Motorcycle Safety:
Motorcycles are a major contributor to road traffic fatalities, with 74% of road deaths involving motorcycle riders.

  • Vulnerable Road Users:

Motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists account for a large proportion of road traffic deaths. "

Where did I say that.

What I'm saying it's Thailand, their driving culture (good or bad) was here well before you I arrived, why complain?

People on motorbikes have head on collision with truck in every country on the planet

This is off topic but, Be proactive, focus your efforts on complaining about the many nasty, disrespectful foreigners, not obeying traffic laws, who are arriving in Thailand now, who were not here before most of us arrived.

My initial comment on this thread was regarding the unsafe riding of foreigners in Thailand.

Not a chance, Thai riders can lane filter like Moto GP riders. There is even a Thai Moto GP rider right now. No American riders but one Thai rider in the top flight of motorcycle racing

We aren't talking about professional motorcycle drivers but the general public. 85% of the daily deaths here are motorbike.

Low IQs and lack of education. 4th grade intelligence. Riding a motorbike without a helmet is just stupid.

Some locals are just as bad as those foreigners you described.
