In a cross-border incident at Prasat Ta Khwai, a Cambodian woman carrying a cloth stitched with her national flag sparked tensions on Saturday. The site, located in Si Sa Ket’s Kantharalak district, witnessed a potential confrontation involving Thai tourists and military personnel.

Around 2:30 pm, the woman attempted to enter the site, which sits on Thai soil, claiming it as Cambodian territory. This prompted an alert from Thai troops stationed at the archaeological landmark, who stopped her from displaying the Cambodian flag.

The soldiers attempted diplomatic measures, explaining Thai regulations prohibiting foreign national symbols on their land. However, the woman argued her right to mirror the practices of visiting Thai tourists, who often exhibit their flag at the site. Her insistence on the site’s Cambodian ownership was overheard by a group of Thai tourists, escalating tensions further.

To prevent a potential dispute, the troops requested the woman return to Cambodia and coordinated with Cambodian authorities to ensure her departure. Despite initial dissatisfaction from the Cambodian military, they complied and escorted her back across the border.

In the aftermath, Thai authorities heightened security measures at Prasat Ta Khwai, wary of future territorial assertions by Cambodian visitors. The incident has resonated across social media platforms, with footage shared widely, fuelling diplomatic friction.

Prasat Ta Khwai is among four ancient sites contested by Cambodia at the International Court of Justice. The ongoing territorial debate includes sites like Prasat Ta Muen Thom, Prasat Ta Muen Toch, and the Emerald Triangle.

The incident underscores the delicate balance of regional sensitivities, reminding both nations of the lingering complexities in their shared history. Authorities on both sides are urged to maintain open dialogue to prevent further escalation and ensure respectful engagement at these culturally significant locations.

considering the orchestration seems to be happening from the Cambodian side - and hun sen seems to have fallen out with the shinawatras - could the army be stoking this in order to try at the elections again?
