In a sweeping trade offensive, US President Donald Trump has slapped a 36% tariff on Thai imports, part of broader sanctions on over a dozen nations. The tariffs, ranging from 25% to 40%, will take effect on 1st August 2025. Thailand, alongside Cambodia, faces one of the highest rates. Originally paused for negotiations after being introduced in April, the levies have now been extended via executive order. Trump has warned affected countries to strike deals before August to avoid penalties. The move risks straining diplomatic ties and raising costs for US consumers as global markets brace for impact.
