The government has stepped up monitoring efforts after health authorities confirmed 40 cumulative cases of monkeypox (mpox) so far in 2025, while reminding the public, particularly high-risk groups, to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Mr. Anukool Pruksanusak, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) under the Ministry of Public Health has reported that this year’s monkeypox situation is less severe than in previous years, with no signs of widespread outbreaks. In 2024, Thailand reported 176 cases, down from 676 in 2023. The total number of monkeypox-related deaths stands at 13 since the disease was first detected in the country.

Although case numbers are falling, authorities remain concerned about infections among high-risk groups and the possibility of more virulent strains entering from abroad. The government has ordered close surveillance, especially at points of entry into the country.

Mr. Anukool stressed the importance of prevention, particularly in sexual encounters. “Using condoms can significantly reduce the risk of monkeypox transmission, along with other sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and syphilis,” he said, noting a recent rise in syphilis cases.

The government has issued five key recommendations to help the public prevent monkeypox infection:

1. Avoid close contact with individuals who have visible skin rashes or lesions.

2. Exercise caution during sexual activity, especially with unfamiliar partners.

3. Maintain personal hygiene, including regular hand washing with soap or alcohol-based sanitiser.

4. Do not share personal items such as towels, razors, or clothing.

5. Seek medical screening if returning from countries with higher prevalence, especially Central and East Africa or the Middle East.

Though the strain currently circulating in Thailand is not considered highly virulent, officials stress that prevention and early detection remain key to controlling the disease.

Within the space of a few days we've had articles on HIV, a new Covid sub-variant not long after an article on the current dominant sub-variant, melioidosis and now monkey pox. Coming soon will be dengue fever as the wet season sets in.

40 cases well the world is doomed. Just put your head between your legs and kiss your *** goodbye

You'd think they'd sweep up every loitering African on lower Sukhumvit, but they're just not serious about Thai public health/ foreign infection from sex with Thai Nationals.

Like HIV it's not serious here until it's SERIOUS

And Dengue much more to fear/likely than this blown up monkey pox.

Funny fact: German PC language police ordered shortcut to "Mpox"

No suspicious associations please.
