How do I get rid of boredom?

I have lived in:

Miami Beach, North Miami Beach ( motel row ), Hollywood FL, 'FLL',  Long Beach Ca ( also Toronto, Montreal, Hong Kong - traveled Europe including Iceland ) stayed in PATTAYA 2 years ( 8 years ago ) ALL back in "the day"

Now as a married Yank in my 80's  I am living the ""quiet"" life in Korat ( Isaan ) with my 54 year old Thai wife ( she has ever been out of Thailand ) in a nice house ( with fenced yard, veggie garden and 3 trees ) in a gated community.

We walk to weekend concerts every other weekend, walk to Temple activities ( non religious ) opposite weekends, a fishing lake 2 minutes away, movie theater trips to downtown Korat,  ( also have  4 major stores 15 minutes away on electric trike ) holiday trips anytime we feel like it - going to take a week on the beach in 3 weeks, visit our condo in BKK when shopping or going on a 'road trip', visit family in her home village - her relatives also visit us. 2 other mixed couples in 30 house complex, landlord and neighbors are friendly including the resident soi dog and 3 cats.

Retirement is WHAT YOU make of it - your LOCATION,  LIFESTYLE and it's important to keep on 'trucking'.

So cool 😎

  • Boredom isn’t an issue of location, it’s a state of mind.

You must have occupation and hobbies

as for me ( 75 years old ), gardening, fitness, reading books and since last year, ship models , improve my English and Thai, etc

many things to do when retired : in other circumstances, I would like to travel, Thailand and around

Curious what a typical week is like for you.  How do you spend the week?  I'm 73, live in Pattaya and I really am never bored.  I find I do not have enough time to do everything I want to do.  There are tv shows and movies I have downloaded and need to get to--plus lots I want to watch on Netflix.  Ditto for mystery and suspense novels I have downloaded--lots I haven't read yet, although I do try to read as much as I can when I can fnd the time.   I usually spend part of the morning exercising and swimming in our pool, trying to keep as fit as I can.  I like the pool for stretching and aerobics.

Spouse and I have just bought and moved to a new house--our in-between house to live in while we plan and build, hopefully, our 'forever' home.  That's keeping us busy doing the planning and the shopping to make materials choices.  We'll be even busier when the construction starts in a few months.

Right now we are in Bangkok for a week visiting spouse's family and doing some other things while we are here.  We like to travel and we have a cruise on the books for November, leaving from Barcelona and visiting Spain, France, and Italy.  Some members of my American family will also be on the cruise so it will be a mini family reunion.  Should be fun.

I'll echo what others have said.  I don't think the problem is where you are living.  It's what you are doing, or not doing, with your awake time.  However, if you do decide to move back to Thailand, I would suggest Pattaya again, but this time you might choose Wongamat rather than Jomtien--which is getting very congested.   You'd be closer to places like Terminal 21 and Central Festival and the beach is nice.  Plus, Pattaya is close to Bangkok for occasional visits and the BKK airport for travel is less than 1 1/2 hours away.

But you claim every Thai city is the same. CM just got voted world's best.

Chiang Mai might be over-rated.

Have you tried masturbating?

You can really kill a lot of time stroking. Try doing one every four hours, just as an experiment. After that have a couple beers. You will find yourself less bored because you're not in your head worrying about what you should be doing.

You will be more bored in thailand unless you speak thai. Not being able to interact fully is isolating which will increase your boredom significantly.

Among all the usual 'advice' take up golf, learn an instrument etc, this is something that I totally agree with, and through my won experience.

A lot of that "activity advice" is distracting and exciting at first, but not fulfilling. You need more and more extreme activities to not get bored with it.

Fulfilling relationships and interactions eradicate boredom. That's hard to do if you don't know the language and you cannot interact with people on a deep level (not just buying something or ordering food level).
