A bizarre road crash in Buriram Province left a motorcyclist injured after he crashed into the rear of a parked pickup truck and was thrown into the air, only to land face-first onto a durian fruit in the back of the vehicle.

 

The incident occurred around 17:20 on 15 July at the Nong Muang intersection, in front of Baan Suan Noodle Restaurant, Mueang District. A concerned passerby immediately contacted the 191 emergency hotline to alert police.

 

At the scene, officers found a black Honda Wave motorcycle damaged and lying on its side. Nearby, a Toyota pickup truck was parked with rear-end damage. The injured rider, identified as Mr. Somchai, was found leaning weakly against a tree, his face visibly bruised and with multiple cuts.

 

Mr. Somchai explained that he was commuting home from work as usual and was unaware that the pickup truck was parked. “I didn’t realise the truck was stopped,” he said. “I was fully conscious while riding, but I have no idea what caused the injuries on my face.”

 

The driver of the pickup, Ms. Narawan, told police she had stopped to purchase a durian on her way home to give to her family. She placed the durian in the back of her truck. “Suddenly, I heard a loud crash behind me. When I got out to check, I saw the motorcycle had slammed into the back of my vehicle,” she said.

 

Rescue workers who examined the scene believe the impact caused Mr. Somchai to be flung upwards before landing in the back of the pickup, where his face struck the durian. Blood stains were found on the plastic bag containing the fruit, supporting this theory. The spiny fruit is notorious for its hard and thorny exterior, which likely caused the distinctive injuries to the man’s face.

 

Mr. Somchai was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash.

 

The unusual nature of the accident has sparked amusement online, but officials stress the seriousness of the injuries and the importance of road safety, no matter how strange the circumstances.

Another good reason to always wear your helmet, never know when you are going to land face first onto a durian.
