A road crash in Chonburi province claimed the life of a 35-year-old man after a pickup truck driver veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a motorcycle early morning on 20 July.

The incident occurred at approximately 06:30 on the Kaset-Khao Sok Road in the Nong Yai district. Police and emergency responders from the Sillatham Rescue Foundation were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious collision.

Upon arrival, officers found the body of Mr. Pichet aged 35, lying motionless in the roadside undergrowth. He had suffered serious head trauma and his legs were severely broken and twisted, indicating the force of the impact. Nearby, a Honda Wave motorcycle bearing a Chonburi registration plate was discovered crushed beneath a damaged Toyota Vigo pickup truck, which had come to a stop in the opposite lane, facing against traffic.

Initial investigations revealed that the pickup driver had crossed into the oncoming lane before slamming into the motorcycle. The driver of the pickup, identified as Mr. Khao aged 72, fled the scene immediately after the collision. However, police were later able to locate and detain him for questioning. He returned to the scene voluntarily and reportedly expressed willingness to accept responsibility and compensate the deceased’s family.

Ms. Mintra 35-year-old, told police she was on her way to take her child to a sports event in central Chonburi when she noticed the pickup truck parked awkwardly on the wrong side of the road. “It was clear something had happened,” she said. “I saw the motorcycle crushed under the pickup and a man lying unconscious in the grass nearby. The driver was nowhere to be found. I called emergency services straight away.”

Police are continuing their investigation and have confirmed that Mr. Khao will be summoned for further questioning as they prepare to proceed with legal action.

So the driver fled the scene but returned voluntarily once police had detained him?  His offer to compensate the victim's family presumably is dependent on his insurance which may decide not to pay out.  His willingness to accept responsibility (eventually) is admirable!
