TV via AIS sim card.

Featured Replies

Hi,

We tried to get fiber to the home with 3BB, True and they don't have any cable where we are staying in Isaan.

We are using an AlS sim in a router for our phone and tablets and it's fine.

What minimum speed would be required to tether a smart TV via the SIM.

Also which website to test the speed we have.

Many thanks for advice.

Why not just do a hotspot on your phone, and let the TV use that wifi?

  • I have one of these, works fine for streaming Netflix/Youtube/Prime etc etc.   I currently have youtube playing in my home office (55" TV) and the miso is in the lounge watching netflix (75"

Thank you, l haven't bought a smart TV yet, was just checking before hand if l will get a decent reception.

@james.d Are you using a Unlimited 10Mbps package?

10Mbps is adequate for some things, up to Full HD, but not for 4k. NetFlix recommends a minimum of 25Mbps for that.

Which router are you using, exactly?

Thank you. Using that l got 10.2 download and 9.3 upload.

To which country, since testmy.net will show the country you are testing to at the top.

Take note, only testmy.net will make sense, since using another test site will test to a server near where you are, and then 10 Mbps is useless

Thank you, l have set it to London UK and retested, 9.2 down and 6.3 upload.

Yes I think that is the package, about 430B per month l think.

We have a TPLink 300mbps 4G LTE.

Unlimited 10Mbps with AIS is currently 482 baht. Does that sound right?

MR6400, MR200 or MR400?

Yes thank you, it's 482B per month. The TL router model is MR6400.

Obviously you cannot do anything more with that particular combo, as you are already getting the maximum from your chosen package.

If you want faster, you'll need to get a different package.

GoMo(AIS) offers up to 15 Mbps, for 259 baht

TRUE offer 30 days of 20Mbps for 509 baht. They also have an Unlimited up to 15Mbps for 12 months SIM for 4,000 baht(333 baht per month).

GoMo obviously better value in that case.

Any new SIM should be subject to speed tests before applying any long term package.

Thank you for your advice, so the GoMo is cheaper and up to 15Mbps?

Or it would mean 2 sim cards?

Apologies, I'm a little confused.

Thanks.

GoMo is AIS's online only subsidiary. No shops, so support is via their application.

If it's good enough, then you can get rid of the 482 baht plan.

I am assuming that you have a Thai wife, as only a Thai person can register a GoMo SIM. One of the benefits of having a Thai partner 😊

Once you receive the SIM, run a speed test using https://testmy.net/

If you get over 15Mbps, then subscribe to their 15Mbps package via their application.

If you want to choose your own number, you can buy directly from the GoMo website: https://gomo.th/select-package

You want the 99 baht 5G No Expired S SIM pack. Nothing else at this stage. But if it's just for Internet, you might not care about the number.

The Lazada suggestion was primarily to prevent you from clicking on the wrong choices on the GoMo website 🙂 But buying direct may be cheaper if there is no charge for postage.

That should be sufficient for most live tv streams if that speed is stable.

Take note you test to a dedicated test server in London, IPTV services obviously don't stream from that server, or most likely not from the UK at all, so that test result is just an indication.

Finally, I presume you did the test on the TV itself, because a speed test on your phone may give a completely different result than on your TV

10Mbps is not suitable for any 4k stream. The SIM is in a router, so no speed test needs to be carried out on the TV. The testing country is irrelevant in this case.

Many thanks for your feedback and time. I will look into the GoMo.

Thank you, no I didn't buy the TV yet, I was looking for advice here before buying.

The TV will be mainly for YouTube and local content.

I suggest that whichever SIM you eventually settle on, that you attach the TV to the Router via Ethernet/LAN, rather than WiFi.

The country is relevant, as is the website you use to test, because almost all IPTV services stream from servers somewhere in Eastern Europe.

Testmy.net is relevant because it test over single connection, as that is all you get with a video stream, while sites like Ookla test over a multithread connection, similar to a download manager.

Testing on the TV is relevant because your wifi signal to the router is different, weaker or stonger, in every location of your house.

Also different devices use different wireless network chips, so will give different results

Thanks for the clarification, because Youtube use a CDN with hundreds of servers in different countries, so you will most likely connect to a local data centre

@CallumWK No, the country is irrelevant, as he is on a capped plan and is maxing out the cap.

I know about testmy, as I was the first to recommend it on this board when everyone else was insisting on utilising Ookla.

Testing on the TV is irrelevant, as the speed is capped. They have what they have and need to work with it. What is important is a stable feed from the Router. I suggested LAN rather than WiFi.

Contradicting yourself in a single sentence is really an achievement I have to admit.

The feed to the router obviously will depend on the location of the device. So testing with a phone in a room close to the router, or on the TV which may be in a completely different location, obviously affects the feed to the router.

What you recommended, LAN or WIFI, is the least of my concerns, since the OP didn't confirm yet if he will be able to pull a LAN cable from the router to the TV, so I comment on the details provided by the OP.

Other than that, not all Ethernet adapters perform the same, a cheaper device will have lower standard internal components. The operating system and processor of the device as play a significant role in the results you get.

I can connect 5 different Android devices by LAN to the router and get 5 times a different test result.

Can you remind us under which of your 6 previous handles that was, because testmy.net certainly was recommended here long before February 9

The cap is for speeds within Thailand. There is no ISP in the world that guarantees a download speed to international locations

@CallumWK Thanks for the word salad, but it isn't necessary. If I state that I was the first to recommend testmy.net, you can take my word for it.

I have had loads of usernames and make no attempt to disguise the fact. Do you want to make something of it?

Again, I looked at the facts as presented and devised a solution. Your confusing scenarios are not needed.

Allow me to explain.... He is on a capped speed plan with no other options other than another mobile network. So as long as he is getting the speed guaranteed by the network, there is nothing that can be done. He is getting the max 10Mbps. So everything else.....is irrelevant, as nothing could be done about it anyway. Getting it now?

Again, my recommendation is to connect the TV to the SIM Router via LAN. The router can be placed almost anywhere, since it only needs an electrical outlet. All of the talk of WiFi is unnecessary unless the OP states that LAN will not be possible.

Thus far, no objections.

So why are you objecting?

I keep explanations simple and to the point. No need to blind with science. People asking for help don't need you to impress them with your 'brilliance'. They just need straightforward advice.

No one mentioned IPTV. Just you and then you went off on a tangent.

For your information, I have an MR6400. Connection via LAN is my recommendation.

Please point out any perceived contradiction. Capped speed. Stable feed(via LAN). Where is the contradiction?

No ISP guarantees a download peed to an international location. The guaranteed speed is to locations within Thailand only. Yes the cap is 10 Mbps, which can not be increased, but can be less, depending on the server location you connect to, and your phone signal. Getting it now?

So you want to claim that he will get the same signal to the 4G/5G tower regardless where in the house he decides to place his sim router. If I hold my phone in my hand, and walk through my house from one end to the other, I can clear see the signal fluctuating even by moving a few meters. Getting it now?

Damn I wonder why there was a need for that.

@CallumWK if he gets a lesser speed than 10Mbps with the router in a position within a few metres of the intended location of the TV, he can let us know and we can look at the options.

But you are wasting time and energy on scenarios that may not even be relevant. Why not wait until then, if it's an issue at all?
