Another earth shattering topic from you as usual, Susan.   What's next? "How much bottled water do you buy when you go to Makro?"

An "old hand" bragging that he's seen it all? And you know Thais and Thai culture better than anyone?  And they get you. And you get them.

  • 1430 islands. And Harrisfan has seen them all.

Only 6, I think, sleeping on, as was too paranoid about the kid & snake bites.   Now the dog is a hassle, plus I like my car with me.  Few more, but don't think daytrips and hanging on the beach for awhile counts.

Phuket

Phi Phi

Chang (large)

Samui

Phayam

Lanta

Since I won't spend much time in the surf any more, mainland beaches are fine to look at & listen too.  A crescent bay with some headland or small out cropping is a bit more important.   A long beach, not matter how pristine doesn't do much for me.

One reason we live where we do, even though the Gulf, quite like Ao Prachuap, Ao Manao & Ao Noi.

Funny you mention dogs LA. Many years ago while I was doing a travel story on Samui, I was told by the Bangkok Post to pop over to nearby Koh Taen and cover the accommodation and natural attractions. Thai gal I had with me was babysitting a friend's dog so when we rolled up to get the boat across with this dog, all the Thais start freaking out. Legend has it that Koh Taen has a curse on dogs, no dogs live there, and any dog taken there dies or goes insane. So we had to leave the damn dog with some Thais on the beach at Samui for a couple of nights.

Took me a while to get the blue-blood reference.

Just back for Koh Phagnan, Zen Beach

-stunning, low development, hippie vibe with a drum circle, tiny high street, 4* Indonesian restaurant. Indo food really goes well with a beach stay.

Been to most of the rest. Koh Chang was my favorite all arounder until I tried Zen beach. 'Prefer Samui to Phuket, but don't get the Phuket hate. The little historic downtown is nicer than more renowned Penang.

Left to visit: Koh Kood and Koh Lipe. Both of which seem very honeymoonish. Awaiting a worthy girlfriend to give them a try.

Don't forget to count Koh Kret

I’ve been to Ko Samui twice. This was just before Covid struck. Stayed in the.Lamai Beach area, very nice

I used to chuckle to myself at the number of “pirates” walking around the area. Older guys cloned as pirates.  Wearing bandannas, white haired goatee beards, some with “Hulk  Hogan” type mustache, large earring or a plug in one ear, heavily tattooed arms, wearing wife beater singlets some with the Union Jack blazen on the  front of their singlet. Does anyone know if these guys are still getting around dressed as above?

My count is something like 26. Many visited multiple times, stay a week or so. Probably 3/4 camping and balance in a bungalow. I have camped almost all Thai natl marine parks. On one island not Phuket, Koh Chang or typical gulf islands I've spent approximately one year .. cumulatively over 20 years - camping 👍 I actually wrote a book, but decided not to try and sell it because I would rather have the campgrounds in the snorkeling to myself rather than some small bit of money that book might have brought in.

I met my wife on the island... camping 🐝

A beer bar is not an Island......

been to four.  Ko Larn off coast from Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket, Ko Samet (was there during the tsunami in 2004.  We miraculously changed our phuket reservations just the day before and went to Samet.  I guarantee  i would have been on the beach when the tsunami struck as I go before the sun gets too strong),
