Let's say you meet a girl. She's Russian. To stay in your country (assuming you live in Norge) you need to get her an EU visa. You apply and you get the visa. You're ecstatic, she can stay.

No discipline, but happy happy.

Temporary happiness Cameron, that’s when trouble starts if you haven’t planned or thought through what you are doing and why you doing it, and planned for what’s coming next.

Easy going is not always the best, even we like to think so

Isn't all happiness temporary, though, Olav?

Unhappy people are unhappy with themselves. They usually try to pin the blame on external sources.

We see many examples of that on this forum.

They'll complain about women, they'll complain about Thailand. The truth is that the problem is almost invariably linked to them, personally.

You tell me?

Happiness is the base foundation and a core element, with ups and downs included, but if you are disciplined, you keep that as your foundation, because you are grateful for who you are, what you are and where you are going. Failures and mistakes is temporary.

The core of happiness is everlasting

The statement "The core of happiness is everlasting" is a complex one, with various interpretations. While some might argue that happiness is fleeting and tied to external circumstances, others suggest that a deeper, more enduring form of happiness can be cultivated from within. This perspective emphasizes inner contentment, gratitude, and a focus on positive values and relationships, rather than external achievements or possessions

I think what the society lacks in these days, or any given time, is more awareness of how powerful philosophy is, and how clean philosophy is compared to politics and religion. You can form your brain to work for you, not against you, with simple exercises which takes dicipline and also with execution ability

Beliefs and values drive happiness

A smoker tells his brain he smokes

A non smoker tells his brain he doesnt

Both can be happy

They asked Goethe, a highly disciplined high achiever, was he ever happy? He replied no more than 4 weeks.

Happiness is just  a by product of overcoming obstacles.  A fleeting high.

I don't think happiness can be "everlasting". Seems like an illusion.

Contentment, gratitude, okay, but these are not happiness. Nor ar positive values and relationships, which are external btw.

Indeed philosophy is much neglected. Here also Indian, chinese, Japanese insights are invaluable and often superior to some Western philosophy. Having said that Nietzsche is in a class of his own.

You have true happiness and you have fake happiness

An Alcoholic is happy when he drinks, and unhappy when he is not. Same goes for smokers, when have cigarettes, but if out of cigarettes, and not available, you know how a true smoker turns out to be, and how does it go for an alcoholic or drug addict without their drugs?

So for those cases we talk about short time happiness. Temporary Happiness.

They say if you chase happiness it runs away like a dog. Let it come to you but how?

Some people have told me they can be happy anywhere. Others can't they need specific surroundings.

Where in the mind is happiness generated?

Satisfaction within yourself. Knowing what you can and cannot change and accepting it.

85 years of life

1m small actions

25 to 50 big things

If we enjoy the small things like a walk, a shower, a coffee then we enjoy life.

People who wait for big events are rarely happy. Watch Thais eat somtam. That's happiness.

Happiness comes with personality issues as well. Goethe had a troubled personality and mind, and many big thinkers, do have a troubled mind, and some may say that’s why they becomes extraordinary great because they can not stop trying to solve complex issues.

We all have or had our difficult times in life, and most overcome them one way or the other. I would say it is possible to reach something close to everlasting happiness even there is gray days, you are as you say grateful and have gratitude in your core.

So what is truly happiness? Another complex question, where many people mistake happiness with substitutes and empty substitutes without any content of value.

We see that in an example here of a foreigner who talks about his life beginning when he gets back to the USA....

He is inherently unhappy. Only seems to see the negative side of where he actually is.

Going back to USA, doesnt mean someone is unhappy here, but rather he feels his life is better there. Happiness could be you have options, but sometimes to many options can give you more problems

The western mind is more of a thinker. Still arguing over ww2 :cheesy:

But a good eastern mind is present day.

@Hummin It's not just the going back to the USA. It's the long list of complaints. When have you seen him write positively about anything, other than nostalgia?

He most certainly thinks people are attacking him. But what is actually happening is that people are challenging his perception of life.

How he reacts to that, tells you something about the person.

Go to a gym 5 days a week,

Yeah, I started going to the gym a few weeks ago.

I like it. Sometimes I don't feel like hauling my butt there because I know PAIN awaits.

But paradoxically, some amount of discipline and routine is good for us.

Although I wouldn't use the word "happiness".

Happiness is too vague as to barely mean anything.

Not sure it even exists. Maybe we should stop using the word altogether.

On a side not, that's why some people like Churches. It's not even the teachings, but the "ritual" ... the routine of going on a Sunday morning, getting together with people in the community at the same time each week.

We are all a product of past, but we do not have to be prisoner by it I read once somewhere, as well we are a product of past, and the future is made today

We need to reprogram the mind like a smoker wanting to quit. Start with 1 habit at a time.

Well, can not anything about people with personality problems, same as the base or the hardcore negative people here who only contributes with negativity wherever they go.

They are so stuck in their misery and can only be triggered to thinking and feeling negativity.

Ignorant and spineless people with no hope at all.

I won't state "no hope". There is the hope that they will read this and maybe give it some thought and perhaps follow up with humility. We all have to start somewhere. The tragedy is for those who do not start at all and instead just spiral  into a vortex of negativity.
