In a significant crackdown, police in Nakhon Ratchasima have dismantled an illegal factory producing a hazardous concoction of kratom juice mixed with illicit cough syrup. The mixture, potentially leading to acute kidney failure, poses a grave health risk.

Yesterday, at Chokchai Police Station, a press briefing led by Police Colonel Khachain Setaputa and Police Colonel Chawarn Wongrot revealed the arrest of 13 individuals linked to the operation. Among the arrested was 39-year-old Trakarn Chuankratok, who admitted to renting the facility and hiring workers to brew the hazardous drink over the past two weeks.

The factory, located at Baan Nong Samrong in Chokchai District, was raided following a tip-off from concerned locals. Authorities seized 840 one-litre bottles of kratom juice and 17 cases of Cox brand cough syrup, each case containing 50 bottles. They also confiscated other ingredients like soft drinks, fresh sugar, and kratom leaves, along with bottling equipment.

Colonel Khachain stated that comprehensive investigations revealed a well-organized operation. Various tasks were assigned to workers, such as boiling and bottling kratom juice, highlighting the systematic nature of the illegal production.

Trakarn confessed to paying workers a daily wage of 400 Thai Baht and purchasing the cough syrup at 2,000 Thai Baht per case. Initially charged with illegal production and possession of unlawful drug mixtures, he faces serious legal consequences.

An initial inspection by a local pharmacist identified the cough syrup as counterfeit and unregistered. Kwanchanok Krutkool, an experienced pharmacist, pointed out that the registration numbers did not match any legitimate records, raising concerns about the syrup's origin. Further testing is underway to determine its authenticity.

Kwanchanok emphasized the severe health risks posed by the misuse of these substances. While users may initially experience euphoria, the combination could lead to toxic residues that dangerously affect the liver and kidneys, risking acute kidney failure.

Authorities have expressed particular concern for young users, who might be unaware of the harmful effects of these drug mixes. Kwanchanok’s warning underscores the critical need for awareness and preventive measures to protect public health.

This crackdown in Korat is a reminder of the hidden dangers posed by illegal drug production and distribution. As investigations continue, authorities are focused on dismantling similar operations and curbing the spread of these harmful substances to safeguard the community.
