Report Venezuelans Freed from El Salvador Mega-Prison Recall 'Hell'
In some case, perhaps. In any case, even for those that think such crual and unusual inhumane conditions are ever justified, they certainly should be reserved for the most extreme criminal cases. The Trump regime has not done that at all. All decent Americans are appropriately disgusted with this. Trump's strongest issue was immigration. Even on that, he is underwater on approval. That's what you get when you take things way too far. -

Crime Drug Trafficking Suspect Arrested After Fleeing Cross-Border Operation
Picture courtesy of Naewna. One of the key suspects in a notorious drug smuggling ring responsible for transporting narcotics into Thailand from a neighbouring country, valued at over 400 million baht, has been apprehended by police. Acting on orders from Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridej, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), officers from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), led by Police Major General Wittaya Sriprasertphap, conducted the operation. The arrest was carried out by a task force from Subdivision 4 of the CSD. The suspect, 19-year-old Peeraphat, was detained on an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Juvenile and Family Court of Nong Khai Province (Warrant No. 19/2565, dated 3 November 2022). He faces multiple serious charges, including conspiring to import Category 1 narcotics, methamphetamine and MDMA (ecstasy), into the Kingdom, possessing and distributing these substances with the intent to sell, as well as offences related to the trafficking of Category 2 psychotropic substances, notably ketamine. Peeraphat was arrested at a sandpit extraction site in Moo 12, Khao Hin Son sub-district, Phanom Sarakham district, Chachoengsao province. The arrest follows a May 2022 operation in which police received intelligence indicating a planned smuggling run of illegal drugs across the Mekong River into Nong Khai province. Surveillance led officers to intercept a suspicious motorboat at the riverbank. Two men were seen unloading large sacks from the vessel. When approached, they fled into the Mekong, abandoning the cargo. Despite the attempted escape, police were able to arrest both individuals, 19-year-old Anon and 25-year-old Watchara, both residents of Udon Thani, near the scene. A search of the sacks revealed a staggering haul: approximately 5,080,000 methamphetamine tablets, ecstasy in both pill and powder form, ketamine and cannabis, with an estimated street value exceeding 393 million baht. During questioning, the detainees admitted to being paid couriers for the narcotics syndicate, which was said to consist of at least 14 members. One of the named participants who evaded capture at the time was Peeraphat, now finally brought into custody on 23 July 2025. Upon arrest, Peeraphat confessed to working as a smuggler, ferrying drugs from the neighbouring country into Thailand, before they were distributed further inland and then exported to third countries. He claimed he was hired by unknown individuals and had no knowledge of the broader network. Peeraphat has been handed over to investigators at Sangkhom Police Station in Nong Khai province for formal legal proceedings. Police investigations into the wider drug trafficking network are ongoing. Adapted by Asean Now from Naewna 2025-07-25 -

UK 220 MPs Demand Keir Starmer Recognise Palestinian Statehood
Over a third of UK MPs are urging Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to officially recognise a Palestinian state. In a bid to send a "powerful" message and advance the two-state solution, 220 MPs from nine political factions have signed the letter—more than half of them Labour representatives. This movement puts pressure on Starmer following France's recent commitment to recognise Palestinian statehood within months. Sir Keir’s recent interactions with French President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Friedrich Merz reflect cautious diplomacy. Starmer's statement underlined the fact that recognition must be part of a broader strategy towards a two-state solution. His focus, alongside key international allies, is on establishing enduring peace through practical solutions. Starmer has emphasised the urgency of a ceasefire, which aims to deliver humanitarian support to Palestinians. He stated that recognition might feature in the peace roadmap but insists it must be within a larger framework ensuring long-term stability for both Palestinians and Israelis. On Friday, he pledged to facilitate urgently needed aid and evacuation for children requiring medical help. A joint statement from the UK, France, and Germany did not directly mention statehood but expressed readiness to support a ceasefire and political process. Criticism of the Israeli government was also voiced, citing aid restrictions and the humanitarian plight in Gaza as untenable. The statement reiterated that Hamas must be disarmed and excluded from Gaza’s future. This cross-party letter follows a coalition of 27 countries condemning the dire situation and the restricted aid inflicted on Palestinians. Israel, which controls supply entries to Gaza, refutes allegations of a siege and attributes civilian suffering to Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry dismissed the coalition’s critique as disconnected and misleading regarding Hamas. Labour MP Sarah Champion, spearheading the letter, argues that recognising Palestine will align with a longstanding cross-party consensus in Parliament. Champion and her colleagues believe British recognition would be a powerful gesture given the UK’s historical ties to the region. The letter includes signatures from various party leaders and MPs, urging the recognition of statehood as a critical step toward peace. Parliament has previously seen motions supporting this stance, notably a 2014 non-binding motion passed with substantial backing, reported BBC. Sceptics warn that without resolving the scope and leadership of a Palestinian state, recognition could remain symbolic. While 139 nations officially acknowledge Palestinian statehood, many Western countries await broader peace agreements before doing so. Recent examples include Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which recognised Palestine, hoping to leverage diplomatic pressure to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. The United Nations accords limited privileges to Palestinian representatives, and numerous international bodies, such as the Arab League, recognise the territory. Nonetheless, certain quarters argue that a recognition without resolving core issues may not tangibly alter the ground situation. Adapted by ASEAN Now from BBC 2025-07-26 -
