Precisely, based upon current funding amounts and methods.  I understood many years ago that SS funding needed to be increased otherwise big cuts would be mandatory.

You,  CATO and @JimGant have the timing of the debt creation wrong.  The debt was created when Treasury sold the GAS securities to the OASI trust fund.  The Congress at the time of the boom in FICA tax collection (in fact almost always) is guilty of spending in excess of government revenues which created the need for OASI's funds.

 

no..... they don't need to cover the shortfall ..... yet.   And.... current laws actually prohibit more debt from being created to bolster SS funding.  Look up the Antideficiency Act.  So far extra debt has NOT been created and that law stipulates that when OASI is depleted the benefits MUST be cut instead of debt being created.  CATO is lying about the current situation.  Only if Congress changes the existing law(s) will any debt be created by SS or Disability benefit payments.

Once again using terms that are confusing to the lay people and ignoring the history of the OASI and the reduction in the unified budget deficit during the boom FICA collection years. It's no coincidence that Social Security's current addition to the unified budget deficit is precisely EQUAL to the previous reduction... so SS's net contribution to the unified budget deficit over the span of its existence has been ZERO.  That's a fact by design and by law.

If they didn't steal from the SS trust fund, it would be over funded. Plenty of people die before they see a dime back from what they put in. And whom do we owe these national debts to exactly? They print money out of thin air for bombs, yet we're going to bankrupt our pension system?
