Thai - Cambodia Conflict Second Army Region Responds to Cambodian Blast Site Allegations

The Second Army Region has issued a formal clarification following the circulation of images online showing the explosion of an abandoned building, reported as part of a former casino, on the Cambodian side of the border. The military confirmed that the site had been used to launch weapons targeting Thai civilians, raising concerns over the use of civilian areas for military purposes.

 

In its statement, the Second Army’s Operations Centre revealed that the Cambodian military had positioned artillery and indirect fire support weapons, commonly referred to by the army as trajectory or arcing-fire weapons, in or near civilian areas and non-military structures. The explosion in question occurred at one such site, located close to the Thai-Cambodian border.

 

According to military intelligence, these locations had been used repeatedly to launch attacks against Thai civilian zones. The military condemned these tactics as a violation of international humanitarian norms, citing the unlawful use of civilians as “human shields.”

 

The army reiterated that all Thai military actions have been strictly targeted at verified threats to national security and never at civilians. The statement emphasised that the use of force has been reserved for military objectives only, specifically where attacks have originated.

 

“The Royal Thai Army remains committed to peaceful resolution and respect for the sovereignty of neighbouring states,” the statement read. “We will not, under any circumstances, direct violence toward civilians. However, we are equally committed to protecting the Thai people from aggression in a manner consistent with international law.”

 

This response comes amid escalating tensions along the border, with sustained clashes reported across several districts in Surin Province. Over the past four days, reports indicate at least 14 civilian deaths and the loss of eight Thai soldiers.

 

Thai officials have urged the international community to condemn the alleged misuse of civilian infrastructure for offensive military operations and to uphold humanitarian standards in the conduct of hostilities.
