Anyone living in Roi Et? What can one do there?

I can afford to live in Phuket, with no problem, I just choose not to.  I'm here now, and it took me 15 mins to go 2 kms, to a restaurant.  And I'm not even in a tourist area.  Did only take 5 mins to return, and same route 🙄

Took 1.5 hr to get through check point after Sarasin bridge, and go simply 30 kms to Thalang area.  No thanks.  Not into congestion, or needing to live, stay in a small area, that '15 minute prison'.

There must be two Phukets.

Whenever I have left or entered the Island through the bridge I have never had to stop, I had to slow down of course, so it took two minutes longer than if the check point had not been there.

Were you riding on the back of a snail?

I can walk to dozens of restaurant etc from where I live in Kathu, Phuket, I can also drive to many in ten minutes.

I agree Patong and other tourist areas are busy and the traffic is slow but there are plenty of other areas in the rest of Phuket which are easy to get to, but most of us do not live in the tourist areas, we go there now and then. We are also surprised how busy they get but there are many other places to go instead.

I suppose it is great to visit Phuket as at least you have things to do while here, living in the back of beyond, no thanks.

With regards to the nightlife, I'm not so upto date on things but:
- Rongbeer is a "Da Wan Dang" style club, so is a quite large venue with live music (usually Thai country style music), tables where you can order food / beer to and is open until late.
- Mai Tai Hotel I'm not sure if this is still open or not but it had a club with coyote dancers  (The road parallel to rong beer)
- Boozer and a few other bars closeby are nice bars which people goto (same road as Mai Tai Hotel)

Hi mate, Long time no hear!
Mai Tai is no longer; it's been rebranded as MGrand, and there are no more 'naughty girls' there!
Boozer and Drone were permanently closed for selling alcohol during the COVID period or something like that.

Plenty of nightlife along the 'strip' (inner ring road 3073). Runs from the Sagate Conference Hall to the junction with the 2044. Easy enough to check on Google Maps. There are some good restaurants and many bars, some have hostesses. A stroll around the central lake (Bueng Planchai) is great in the evening to people-watch and to get a feel of the warm hospitality Roi-Et offers, along with the many small eateries and bars that surround it. Have a go on the zipline that has just opened from the Roi-Et tower to the centre of the island in the lake!
There are a few 'farang' bars dotted about the city if you feel the need to get the local bamboo drum gossip; the usual suspects frequent!

Is Roi-Et a place to go for a holiday? It definitely is not, but for a few days it's fine. If you're a beer-swilling womaniser looking for endless fun, then forget this hidden gem of a city. I live on the outskirts in a quiet mooban which suits me fine and enjoy the peaceful lifestyle, a 10-minute walk down the road from 'the strip' if I ever feel the need to frequent a bar or two!

Yea, that was a first, and took it to be weekenders, as it was Saturday.    Fairly obvious, as when we got to the split, with 3 lanes turning to the beaches, which was quite backed up, the  2 lanes going toward town opened up.

No need to try to inform me about Phuket, as only been there 30+ times, at least.  About 5 X during covid (including 'high' season) and it was BLISS.  Last time prior, and June 2023, and it was crap again, crowded and no parking.   Actually surprised, since it was June.

Got the same things to do where we live, except the overly tourist stuff, which I don't do on Phuket anyway.  Only thing I've done on Phuket that can't do where we live is Bungy Jump, and once is enough.  Beach, pool, eat, which not a beach holiday this time, so just continue chillin', pool & eat, while visiting with niece.   Leave tomorrow as not going to try to fight the crowds, and can't swim at beaches anyway.

Can't see returning, except to visit niece, and nice she lives in Thalang area.  Was going to pop over to the Old Town Sunday Market, but have no desire to fight the traffic and parking really is a joke.

@JamesPhuket10Another reason not to come to Phuket ... just lost electric at hotel.   Guess they are doing brown outs this part of Thalang, as 'non essential' :cheesy:

Pool time 😎

What a sh!thole ... 30+C & no AC.   Maybe I can run an extension cord through the one bedroom into the main kitchen & dining area, run the fan & fridge off my car.  Never without electric with  BEV :coffee1:

We live in places which suit each of us, no answer is the best, I do make jokes of it sometimes but it is all for fun.

I like Phuket as each area is a different contrast  to another.

Example Kathu where I live, as I state before I live on a closed housing estate with 350 or so houses and 99% of the houses are occupied by Thai families so that does not at all feel like a tourists areas.

So they are settled down and there are plenty of jobs available to them and many have their own business. They do not need to go north to settle down.

The only cars passing the houses are driven by the people who live here, no access to the general public so it is very quiet.

There are banks/chemists/ 7/11 /and many other shops in walking distance outside the boundary of the housing area, Massive Makro/Central Shopping/ Super sized  shopping areas are within ten minutes drive.

The beach fifteen minutes.

Sometimes but rarely I go with my partner to her area near Nakhon si Thammarrat, it is a small village, she goes there to check on her house rentals. I am ready to leave after two days as it is boring as hell and feel great when I get back to Phuket.

So Phuket is what people make of it, it is ⅓ the size of Greater London and so is a massive area, many people come for a few days, visit the darker side of the island and then go back with a false idea of what Phuket has to offer.

In my area there are lots of bars and restaurants where both Thai and farangs go and none of them are girly bars like some of the areas in Patong.

Ten minutes drive from me is a reservoir with a cycle/walking/jogging path around its six miles route, we go walking there every day, of the walkers/cyclists etc 98% of them are Thai.

With the exception of the beach, you could well be describing the place in Isaan where I live.

I guess you haven't visited 95% of Isaan.

I have in a way I suppose.

In my own experience most of the bar girls working in Phuket/Pattaya are from Isaan so I have visited the place indirectly I suppose.

But no I have never fallen for one of them, bought a house, car, moved into her Issan village and subsidesed the rest of her family including her mum and dad, not for me.🙂

I am in the UK for a few months at the moment, but during the last 2.5 years of living in Kathu most power cuts lasted seconds. I will return next month.

Once or twice the power cuts lasted ten minutes so I just sat in my aircon car, no problem.

If Phuket is so crap, why do you keep on going there?

What I like about my experience of Phuket is of the 350 houses in my gated community is there are only about three houses occupied by farangs, the rest are Thai, hence I do not have to listen to moaning farangs going on about how they do not like Phuket.

My Thai neighbours seem very happy to live there, they could sell up and move to a cheaper area like Isaan, but they would hate to have to do that.

The easy solutions is to stay away, you will not be missed, nor your moaning.

Most visits were 12 years running, after I first got here, and 2X a year, during school breaks, so 2001-2013 (?) and not crowded, congested, or overpriced.  Surf still safe to swim in, Mar/Apr/early May & Sept/Oct during school breaks.

Then it simply got more congested & expensive, while I was discovering other places along the way, and couldn't justify the extra travel time and expense, going much past Chumphon from Udon Thani.

Started settling in at Ban Krut & Thung Wua Laen for beach breaks.  Along with stops at HH & PKK, then started avoiding Hua Hin, for same reasons.

Visited Phuket a lot during covid, as never went during high season before, as off season was crowded & expensive enough.  It was BLISS, as nobody there, and keep the lights on cheap, if even open.  Loved it.  Had the beaches almost to ourselves.  Playlist of Phuket beaches:

As stated, last visit, June 2023, and it was back to crap again.  Oh well, lovely while it lasted.

Now we do Southern loops from PKK to: Chumphon, Surat Thani, NST, Krabi, Phang Nga, and hit different areas, try to, each time.

Only at Phuket now, as niece finally got a day off, while we are in the area (Krabi) and we haven't seen her in over 7 yrs.

Traffic wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday, and we got around rather easy, though didn't go to beaches / tourist areas.  Busy, but not gridlock (surprisingly) like yesterday.

Like I said in a previous post. You don't seem to have met many expats who live in Isaan. You instead prefer to group them all together according to a story you've heard somewhere. Likely on a barstool or from a troll.

I have met many, many guys who did live in Isaan with a Thai wife, they were crying into their beer or meal while telling me how they had met them while the woman was working as a bar girl, she fell in love with him, he was the only one etc.

The fact the women are 20 to 30 years younger than the farangs does not seem to cause any surprise to the farangs.

Later on they moved to her village in Isaan, he bought a house ,car, paid for her family.

The story ends a few different ways, the guy visited his own country for a month or two, comes back and the house has been sold and the wife was gone,  he ran out of cash and was then kicked out, there are variations of this.

I think they prefer much older men as they do not have to wait that long before they are dead and can then claim the rest of the farangs wealth.

Before anyone suggests I am bitter and it has happened to me, no, I would never be stupid enough to think a woman 20 to 30 years younger than me could find any guy in the world desirable apart from the money of course, but it seems like a lot of farangs really are stupid.

I suppose living in Phuket in a non-tourist area is different to being a tourist.

The area is quiet, it has its own private park, outside it is busy during the rush hour but easy to get around the other times so I can do my shopping and things then.

Kathu and is an easy to get around, after living there for a while the fun of the noisy areas like Patong and other busy areas are not fun any more so I go once or twice a year, when I go there I feel like I am on holiday as it is not like the rest of Phuket

So I do not have to travel that far to do the daily things I wish to do.

I am not sure what people mean when they say Phuket is expensive, do they mean expensive compared to the villages at the end of the beyond or compare to England for example.

I have been in England near London for the past few months wile buying a property here to rent out.

Comparisons, a three bed detached house in Chelmsford where I am at which is a 30 minute commuter belt area to London would cost £500k to £650k, the house I live in, in Phuket with thee bedrooms and two bathrooms cost 4.2million baht 15 years ago and are now selling for 6 million baht.

I went to a restaurant near by a month ago with a friend, we had a one course meal each, she does not drink so had two cokes, I had a few pints of beer and the bill was £110

A beer in a pub costs £7.80

So as far as I am concerned Phuket is dirt cheap, my daily spend allowance in Phuket is about, 4,300 baht a day, some days I spend nothing, I would have to eat and drink all day long to spend that amount.

Erm, you are wrong on all counts , I have been with my Thai partners of 20 years, she and I are very happy thanks, good fun on a daily basis.

Both financially independent and so not a partnership based on money as many are it seems in Thailand and no 20 to 30 years age gap.

I wrote about the Thai Isaan and farangs as the stories make me laugh, I think they are funny. 😀

Yes, I spoke to the girls and expats many years ago, I don't expect for the bar scene to have changed now, the bargirls  are there to make money you know from the customers, if as many do, get a customer for a decade or two they will do it.

I know quite a lot of farangs in the past who did meet Thai bars girls and went to live in Isaan with them, so I can image there are more farangs married to Thais in Isaan than in other areas, as I can see a lot of farangs never come into contact with a standard Thai woman, so they buy them from bars.

I probably know a lot more expats living happily in Isaan with their wives. Many of whom they did not meet in bars.

Like I said, you've heard a sob story in a bar and taken it that everyone us the same.

I wonder why someone living in Phuket would come onto the Isaan forum, if it wasn't to troll?

Is Isaan in Thailand, do I live in Thailand, I think that is the simple connection.

Whenever a person calls the other one a troll it means they have nothing else to say and have lost the discussion.

What are the limits around Thailand which I should be interest in writing about, 50 miles, 100 miles. 😀

I wasn't aware I was in anything that can be lost.

I questioned if you were a troll as you have most of the traits of one.

Grouping people you don't know into the same group, assuming what they do, assuming how they live, assuming how much money they have, all to give the impression you are better than everyone else. And, changing your story to suit.

No more soapy massage next to it either!. Now you’d be lucky to get a happy ending massage at one of the small town massage places nearby!
