Sen. Bernie Sanders on Gaza: “Genocide is a legal term. What is going on now clearly is absolutely horrific…But the important point is not what you call it — it is horror — the answer is what the hell do we do about it?

While I agree with Bernie’s question, the term Genocide matters as nations that are signatories to the UN Convention on Genocide are obligated to prevent and punish Genocide.

Genocide is taking place in Gaza and Europe is duty bound to stop it, Israeli scholar says

To prove a genocide, you also have to show that the intent is being implemented and that there are no other motives than wanting to destroy the group, Bartov,  a genocide and Holocaust scholar, explained.

He pointed to systematic Israeli military operations aimed at demolishing “hospitals, mosques, museums and the goal is then to force the population to leave,” despite the fact that “people won’t and can’t leave and have no place to go to.”

What distinguishes Israel’s operation in Gaza from ethnic cleansing and confirms the will to destroy Palestinians, according to Bartov, is that “you make it impossible for that group to reconstitute itself and it is section D of the Genocide Convention, it’s about imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.”

Scottish first minister calls Israel’s actions in Gaza ‘genocide’ for first time

John Swinney has described for the first time Israel’s actions in Gaza as a “genocide”, with the Scottish first minister saying it was indisputable.

Swinney became the second leader of a UK nation to use the term “genocide” in relation to the attacks by the Israel Defense Forces on Palestinians in Gaza after Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill did so last month.

Speaking to journalists at an Edinburgh fringe event in the Scottish capital, he said: “It’s quite clear that there is a genocide in Palestine – it can’t be disputed. have seen reports of terrible atrocities which have the character of being genocide. I’ve expressed that and obviously it’s not reached all those individuals, but that’s my feeling.”

J Street head says he was ‘persuaded’ by arguments that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

Ben-Ami’s reversal places him among an increasing number of well-known left-wing Jewish voices who have made the accusation, which Israel denies and which US President Donald Trump rejected on Sunday.

In a newsletter Sunday marking Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning to commemorate catastrophes throughout Jewish history, Ben-Ami, who heads the liberal Zionist advocacy and lobby group, recalled his parents’ experience with the Holocaust and laid out Hamas’ crimes against Israel, including the terror group’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

“Yet none of that provides any rationale for what Israel is doing now in Gaza,” wrote Ben-Ami. “Denying food and basic necessities of life to civilians. Soldiers shooting at civilians trying to get food. Destruction of the entire infrastructure of Gaza. Forcing the population into intolerably small areas. Hoping to create the conditions under which an entire population will be forcibly displaced.”
