Air Conditioning Bill Question/Not running at all

Featured Replies

I live in a 85sq meter, newish (2 year old) 2BR/2BA condo in Ekkamai, Bangkok.  My summertime MEA electric bills are usually 3500--4500baht per month, with normal usage. I do work from home

and keep the A/C temperature in my 3 wall units at 28 constantly during day/22 at night (in just one bedroom unit).

I was away from my condo the ENTIRE month of July and turned all 3 AC units off. It was empty with no tenants and no one coming in at all.  I only had the refrigerator and 2 small air purifiers running. No other electrical usage that I can think of. The July bill for the "empty period) was 2500baht and June was 3700baht.  Last year's July bill when I was here in BKK was closer to 4000 baht.

Why is my July bill only 33% less than June, when no AC was running at all?  The Juristic checked the meter and said it was fine. Can MEA do anything to verify this?

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Do you get your bill directly from MEA? MEA can install a check-meter, but if they find no problem then there's a charge, so a few tests first would be a good idea.

You should be able to see on the bill how many units (kWh) you used, it's a much better way of determining usage than the cost.

Do you have access to read your meter?

Assuming you do turn off the main switch in your condo, read the meter then go out for a few hours, your fridge/freezer will be fine for a few hours with no power, when you return read your meter again. Of course it should be the same. If it has moved then you have someone/something using your energy.

Now turn on your main switch, leave your condo exactly as you did when you were away and do the same thing as before, this time you should have used some energy. How much did you use over what time period? You should be able to use this figure to approximate how much your empty place was using each day you were away.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

That doesn't sound right at all.   When were O&A, the house uses ~5 kWh a day, with 2 fridges running, one light on, and no air purifiers.   So 30 days would only be 150 kWh = <750 THB, and that's at 5 THB per kWh.

Could be a simply mis reading of meter, and will adjust itself next bill, unless meter is digital, then should accurate.

If not, I'd think your supplying a bit of juice to common area, or another unit.  What's your air purifiers usage rated at, per hour.  Why even run them, if not there, especially during rainy season.

Yeah this check out - I often leave the country for a few months at a time and the bill drops from between 9 and 11k Baht per month (completely down to AC usage in multiple rooms all day long) to about 800 Baht a month - I have multiple fridges and at least one freezer - normally I just leave one of the freezers on while away though.

In fact once I returned from a long trip abroad the electric bills directly from the electric company only contained '*****' instead of a price - when we enquired asking what's up with this bill they said it's because your usage changed a lot.

We explained that we were out of the country for a few months - in this case it was almost 6 months they cleared it and the bills went back to normal from then on - including another period where we went away for 3 months.

This is a house, not a condo - anything goes in a lot of those condos

Thanks for your good recommendations and advice, everyone. I don't think my 2 small air purifiers cost that much in electricity.

I'm coordinating with MEA to do another meter check/investigation of my high bill.
