Thailand's suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra remains unyielding on whether she'll appear in court on August 21, her birthday, to discuss a phone call with Cambodian leader Hun Sen. The call, leaked during rising border tensions, has put her position in jeopardy. The court, which suspended her on July 1, is set to deliver its verdict on August 29.

Reporters' Persistent Inquiries Draw No Comment

Despite persistent questions at parliament this Thursday, Paetongtarn chose not to clarify her plans for the court date. When asked about the importance of that day, she quipped, “Oops, August 21 is just a birthday.” Her reticence was notable as she left with Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri, declining further comment on the sensitive matter.

Phone Call Sparks Ethics Concern

The controversy traces back to a June 15 phone call where Paetongtarn allegedly made disrespectful comments about a key Thai military figure and appeared to accommodate demands from Hun Sen. A petition from disaffected senators accuses her of ethical misconduct, calling her honesty into question just days after the call was leaked on June 18.

Paetongtarn's Defence: Tactics Misinterpreted

Paetongtarn has already defended her remarks as strategic, claiming they aimed to defuse tensions. She has submitted a detailed defence in writing, stressing her commitment to national interests. The court plans to conduct a witness hearing on August 21, with expectations for her and the secretary of the National Security Council to testify.

Implications for Paetongtarn’s Future

Failure to appear in court could mean a voluntary forfeiture of the right to testify, with proceedings continuing without delay. Written closing statements are due by August 27. The court's decision will hinge on constitutional clauses demanding high ethical standards from ministers, reported the Bangkok Post.

Ongoing Political Activities

Despite her suspension as prime minister, Paetongtarn continues serving as culture minister. Her fate now rests with the court's interpretation of her conduct amidst this diplomatic debacle.
