Two students were killed and a further twelve people injured when a six-wheeled lorry driver lost control and ploughed into the side of a school transport van in Sisaket province late afternoon on 15 August.

The crash occurred at around 17.20 on Highway 226, outbound from Sisaket town towards Uthumphon Phisai, near Ban Klang in Khayung subdistrict, Uthumphon Phisai district.

According to witnesses, the Isuzu lorry, fitted with a steel cargo cage, veered across the central reservation into the path of an oncoming Toyota school van. The force of the impact left both vehicles damaged, scattering debris across the carriageway and causing a traffic tailback stretching several kilometres.

The school van, bearing Sisaket registration plates, had been transporting pupils from Marie Srisaket School, Satree Srisaket School and Sisaket Witthayalai School to their homes in Rasi Salai and Silalat districts.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, providing first aid before transferring the injured to Uthumphon Phisai Hospital. Two children, named as nine-year-old Karawit and thirteen-year-old Natthalak, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The van driver, 62-year-old Kamphrai, told reporters that the lorry suddenly crossed into his lane, leaving him no time to avoid the collision. He attempted to keep control of the vehicle to prevent it overturning, only to discover that several students were seriously hurt.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Officers are expected to question the lorry driver, who was taken to hospital with injuries, once he is medically fit.
