Politics Pheu Thai Slams 'Secret Deal' Allegations as Baseless

The Pheu Thai Party has firmly denied allegations of a secret pact by Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra with Constitutional Court judges to sway an upcoming verdict involving current Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

 

Former Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit labelled the rumours as a "groundless fabrication" intended to damage Thaksin and Paetongtarn as critical court decisions loom this month.

 

The Criminal Court is set to deliver its verdict on Thaksin's lèse majesté and computer crime case on 22nd August.

 

A week later, on 29th August, the Constitutional Court will determine whether Paetongtarn breached ethical standards concerning a leaked audio clip with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

 

Prompong warned that dragging judges into politics could tarnish judicial credibility. He emphasised that claims against Thaksin's case hold no substance and that Paetongtar's case features robust evidence.

 

"The prime minister has acted transparently," he stated, affirming that the leaked clip poses no security threat, reported the Bangkok Post.

 

The controversy began with a recording that was leaked online on 18th June, which features Paetongtarn purportedly criticising the Second Army Region commander and offering assistance to Hun Sen. The case accuses her of violating ethical standards for political officeholders.

 

In her court clarification, Paetongtarn described the remarks as mere negotiation tactics, not improper offers. The audio has sparked a family rift between the Shinawatras and Hun Sen’s family.

 

Former senator Somchai Swangkarn also dismissed the rumours of a secret deal, clarifying that the visit of the Constitutional Court judges to India was part of an official training programme. He provided evidence from the court’s website to debunk the claims.

 

The website confirms that the court president and judges participated in an executive training programme in India, which involved meeting key legal figures and visiting the Supreme Court and Delhi University.

 

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong noted that Paetongtarn would attend court on 21st August, coinciding with her birthday. Despite potential political setbacks, Sorawong expressed confidence in Paetongtarn's integrity and foresaw all issues being resolved factually.

 

Questions regarding a contingency plan for a potential replacement led Sorawong to acknowledge Chaikasem Nitisiri, a seasoned nominee who is prepared to step in if necessary. The party remains focused on handling matters based on facts as decisions draw near.

The controversy began a long time ago when Thaksin made the speech that got him charged, then his fiasco with his prison sentence in the hospital and his being the puppet master to his daughter.

She was never transparent regarding this until people began saying her conversation was treasonous. Then she began to make excuses as to why she said the things she did to Uncle Hun Sen. 

 

Although, i seriously doubt the courts will rule against the Thaksin family, there is always hope that they will be dislodged from anything political and Thaksin returned to prison for his fake hospital stay rather than doing it in prison.

Such criticism obviously violates the sovereignty of the RTM.

I am surprised the RTM didn't sue the PM for defamation.

Thaksin was a tool in the establisment's box to keep MFP out of power. A necessary evil it could be said. Remember also that Thaksin promised never to get in bed with the military-establishment but that's exactly what he did. It was part of the deal as was the VIP stay in the RTP hospital.
