Sometimes, bribe is sought on entry if the stay period seems "too long" for a tourist.

My English friend said it happened to him earlier this year.

He had been previously on informal education visa for 3 years.

When he sought his entry(from Lao,by air) after that visa expired, men in uniform demanded B3000-.

He paid and got visa waiver stamp on his passport.

Very, very lucky they asked for and took cash direct on entry - though I have read similar infrequent accounts of such over the years on this forum.

Most times, you must pay in-advance through an agent - called "Safe Entry" service - who then passes the money to immigration, discretely.

This ensures their "denial of entry for an illegal-reason" extortion racket is well-funded, without the risk of being caught demanding bribes.

  • It is rare for immigration at Thai airport to request onward flight or money. It can occur however not usual.  They can refuse entry with or without the funds.

Institutionalized silent extortion scheme that stays invisible.

That same friend, then chose to join border-run tour to Chiangkong next time(for b2000 something. all inclusive other than cost of meals) while he intends to apply for DTV later.
