Thailand Post Suspends US Parcels as Trump Axes Tax Exemption

It's absurd on many levels. I had to send a FBAR (declaration of foreign bank accounts) earlier this year and I filed US taxes. I don't think dead people do that.  Also, when an American dies in Thailand, the embassy is notified right away.  In other words, it's not even necessary. If he wants to save money, stop the program or make it online.

Mailing is the only option. They did have a fax option, but stopped that so they could get an original with real ink in the signature.

"when an American dies in Thailand, the embassy is notified right away"

555!  That is a hilarious admission on your part that you live in some "rules based" fantasy land and have exactly ZERO understanding of how things get done, or DON"T get done, In "the land of envelopes"

The taxes they will collect in the long run will allow to raise wages. Eventually, the buying power of American people will increase. Not immediately, it will take 2 years or so.

On another thread, those of us who get US Social Security here have to file form 7162 (Proof of Life) now. It's very late this year and a lot of people haven't gotten them yet. We now have 60 days from July 31st (when they were mailed from the US) to get them back to the SSA. This is a new hiccup we don't need.

However, I'm not certain whether documents are included in this.  Chat GPT sites references that say documents are exempt. It's "goods" that they're after.  We'll see.

I got my 7162 2 weeks ago, sent it by UPS one week ago, got there in 3 days but was sdelivered PO Box 7000, Wilkes-Barre 18767 instead of the the non-PO Box address given by Philippines FBU for couriers in zip 18702. Still trying to sort it out.

Because the US has Taco Donny changing the rules, sometimes in the same DAY.  The Americans do not have an organized, linear, proven infrastructure to manage TARIFF / TAX on packages less than $800, and Thailand is basically saying "Don't make your half baked moronic daily tariff changes our problem, call us when you can hit your own a$$ with both hands"

Just like what Thailand did with their great cannabis laws when it was legalized.....right?

Ahh! US expats on SS who have to return proof of life forms is just one example. Anyway snail mail is not affected.

Who said snail mail is not affected?
The news is that ALL letter and packages to the USA are now blocked by Thai Post.

Another thread says DHL is now stopping some shipments to the US (presumably under $800 value but no value declared), until further clarity.

Every day is another surprise in the Excited States of America, in'it?

Between this, and his demand for close scrutiny of 55 million visa holders, while firing a huge amount of civil servants - wh o is going to do all of this?

The MAGA Online Process:  Find an unrelated event or process and make a false comparison, but NEVER address or dis-prove the original thesis.

Example: Trump is such a consistent flip flopper on tariffs people on Wall Street nick named him "TACO" (Trump Always Chickens Out") and Thailand does not have the time, energy, incentive, or budget to "F Around" with stupid tax policies.
The MAGA Response "Something about a DOMESTIC cannabis  regulation that they decided was not working well, and had ZERO relationship to the USA trade policy."
This is why people do not take MAGA seriously. "All hat, no cattle"

Can tariffs (taxes) imposed on American importers really allow them to increase wages? Do Americans honestly believe Trump’s claim that tariffs are paid by the exporters? In reality, the U.S. government is collecting huge sums in tariffs from Americans and then handing some of it back in the form of tax cuts—mainly benefiting billionaires and high earners.

The idea that the U.S. must balance imports and exports by country makes no sense to any serious economist. Imposing high tariffs on poorer nations simply because they don’t buy American cars or tech products is misguided. The truth is, the U.S. benefits enormously from being able to import low-cost goods made in countries where workers earn just $5 a day or not much more.

So ask yourself—who’s really doing the exploiting here? Those workers earning $5–10 a day won’t be buying an American car anytime soon.

Define "serious economist".

You do realize that this experiment in globalism is less than 100 years old, don't you? And that is has failed miserably? Another word for "serious economist" is lobotomized clown.  Not that these aren't smart people. Only that they've been indoctrinated into a cult that makes them think in terms of averages, and that is absolutely the wrong metric to be using.

Remove the top 1/3rd, and ask what these actions taken by "serious economists" have done to the rest of humanity. Your "serious economists" ARE THE PROBLEM.  They are exactly what we are fighting against. So who is really doing the exploiting?  In my mind, it's those programming the "serious economists".

Just wait. The stock market might be roaring now due to a statement from the FED, but just give it a little time.

We just received our annual Social Security paperwork to check if we are still alive or made any changes to our lives, we checked all the boxes and tried to send back to Philadelphia USA and the Thai post office said they are no longer accepting mail or packages to be delivered to the US. So now we are stuck looking for an alternative.  They will stop are retirement income if they don’t hear from us.  Thanks Trump.

I'm in a similar situation but my form never arrived!

It's too early to panic.

There is always a second mailing if you don't get the first one back in time.

Hopefully by then Thai Post will be back in service for us.

If you don't receive the second mailing by a certain time then there is an alternative method to report.

Even if it gets as bad as cutoff there is now a by phone protocol to restore benefits.

Probably easier to fly to Manila. Trump is a moron.

That won't be necessary even with no mail.

But back up measures are not in play until the right time.

After the second mailing if you didn't get the second mailing OR later if you did send back and get cut off (worse case).

None of this would be a problem had the forms been mailed out in late May or early June as they usually are. This is a Trump/Musk combo disaster in the making.

Well, you're likely going to have to send it FedEx, to the tune of maybe 2500 baht for a letter.

No doubt Trump's ignorance knows no boundaries, and the destruction is only starting to begin. Under the goofball America is becoming less relevant by the day, and that's probably a good thing.

Trump is way off the deep end with his trade war.  Nothing will be gained from this and Americans will be harmed. Here's a real world example. Last year I bought this pair of headphones for $80. I'm back in the US now and wanted to buy another pair and the price has jumped to $109.  The only winners here are the government sector and taxes they will collect.

Think of it like this, the company who up the price wasn't willing to eat some of the tariff 15%? Doing so would cut into their profit they got so use to without any tariff. Any company in my view sock the full tariff is pure greed.

I guess 'y'all' will be heading to the nearest FedEx or UPS then... DHL might send docs - you'd neeed to check. DHL is the main international courier here in Thailand. But the others are around. Maybe FedEx and UPS would be a better bet though as they are US companies. DHL is European I recall.
