Phayao Hospital, in collaboration with Mae Puem Subdistrict Municipality, Mae Puem Health Promotion Hospital, Muang Phayao Police Station, the Highway Police and local rescue units, conducted a large-scale emergency drill simulating a serious road traffic crash involving multiple casualties.

The exercise recreated a collision between a pickup truck and a crowded passenger songthaew minibus at a U-turn near Huai Bong School on Phahonyothin Road in Mae Puem Subdistrict, Muang District, Phayao Province. The scenario involved numerous simulated injuries, testing the coordination and readiness of first responders and medical teams.

Rescue volunteers from Mae Puem Municipality, located closest to the site, were the first to arrive, providing initial triage and first aid before alerting Phayao Hospital. Emergency doctors and medics were then dispatched to the scene to stabilise and transport the injured to the hospital’s accident and emergency unit. Meanwhile, Highway Police officers secured the area, managed traffic flow, and prevented secondary crashes.

Officials explained that the aim of the drill was to strengthen preparedness across medical staff, equipment and response systems, ensuring accurate, rapid and safe care for mass casualty incidents. The exercise highlighted the importance of precise coordination and timeliness in emergency care to minimise fatalities and long-term disabilities.

Following the drill, a debriefing session was held, where participating agencies reviewed both strengths and shortcomings in the response plan. The findings will be used to refine procedures and improve efficiency in the event of a real-life emergency.

This joint exercise underlines Phayao’s commitment to enhancing readiness for unexpected incidents and safeguarding public safety.
