An incident in Mae Chan district of Chiang Rai, has left a father and his daughter dead after they unknowingly consumed poisonous mushrooms in what became their final meal together.

The victims were identified as Mr. Bunpan, 78 and his daughter Ms. Wijitra, 40. Their bodies were brought to the village hall in Rong Ko, Mae Kham subdistrict, where local residents gathered to help prepare for the funeral rites.

According to relatives, the fatal meal was prepared on the evening of 22 August by Mrs. Relai, 68, the wife and mother of the deceased. She said her daughter, who worked as a company manager in Chiang Mai, returned home once a month with gifts for her parents. On this occasion, she had brought mushrooms, thought to have been given to her by a colleague, believing them to be edible forest mushrooms.

Mrs. Relai explained that she cooked a northern-style mushroom curry at around 18.30. Although she tasted the broth, she did not eat the mushrooms themselves, as she disliked them. Her husband and daughter ate the meal, but shortly afterwards Mr. Bunpan collapsed, foaming at the mouth and struggling to breathe. Neighbours rushed him to Mae Chan Hospital.

Fearing for her daughter, Mrs. Relai went to check her room, where she found the door locked. With the help of neighbours, they forced entry and discovered Ms. Wijitra in similar condition, barely breathing. She too was taken to hospital, but both father and daughter later died.

Health officials collected the remaining curry and mushrooms from the family’s kitchen for toxicology testing. Police in Mae Chan are investigating the source of the mushrooms, which were reportedly given to Ms. Wijitra by a colleague.

Wow! The mother will spend the rest of her life feeling guilty about this. I am surprised the police do not take action against the woman who sold her the poison mushrooms as it seems she is the guilty party here.

It's not the mother's fault.

The article already said they're investigating the source of the mushrooms.
