Pope Leo XIV expressed solidarity with Ukraine amid the harsh winter and the war's consequences by organizing the delivery of humanitarian aid, including generators, medicines, and food, reports Vatican News.

At the pontiff’s initiative, three trucks carrying 80 electric generators were sent to Ukraine and have already arrived on site. The aid is intended to support the population amid severe cold and damaged energy infrastructure.

Alongside the generators, thousands of medical supplies were delivered to Ukraine, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, dietary supplements, and melatonin, which helps people under constant stress and anxiety improve their sleep.

In January, Russian state revenues from taxing the oil and gas industries fell to 393 billion rubles (US$5.1 billion). This is down from 587 billion rubles ($7.6 billion) in December and from 1.12 trillion ($14.5 billion) in January 2025.

Janis Kluge, an expert on the Russian economy at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, says this is the lowest level since the Covid-19 pandemic.

On top of that, on 21 January, the EU began banning fuel made from Russia crude — meaning it could no longer be refined somewhere else and shipped to Europe in the form of gasoline or diesel fuel.

Russian oil revenue plummets as sanctions target Putin’s cash cow

The head of the EU's executive commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Friday proposed a full ban on shipping services for Russian oil, saying sanctions offered leverage to push Russia to halt the fighting. “We must be clear-eyed: Russia will only come to the table with genuine intent if it is pressured to do so," she said.

On February 6th, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that Canada is going to send AIM missiles to Ukraine to aid the country’s air defense after a meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Defense Minister David McGuinty.

The new missile support was provided under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which is an initiative set up by the Trump administration to allow other countries to purchase American weapons for Ukraine.

Miltiarnyi reported that Ukraine currently already uses three types of AIM missiles in its armed forces. The Aim-7, Aim-9, and AIM-120 are all used to intercept Russian drones and missiles. Each system is integrated into the Ukrainian military in different ways.

Rising Russian losses strain Kremlin’s Ukraine offensive

Russia’s mounting battlefield losses in Ukraine are increasingly undermining the Kremlin’s ability to sustain and execute large-scale offensive operations, according to a new analysis reported by the Financial Times. Military experts say Moscow’s current tactics are yielding minimal territorial gains while exacting a heavy human cost.

Michael Kofman, a senior research fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told the Financial Times that Russia’s strategy of applying constant pressure along a broad front is unlikely to produce major operational breakthroughs. President Vladimir Putin has wagered that relentless attacks will eventually weaken Ukrainian defenses, but analysts argue the approach is proving ineffective.

On key sections of the front, Russian forces are advancing at a rate of just 15 to 70 meters per day, according to multiple assessments. A recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) found that Russia’s current offensive pace is slower than in most major conflicts over the past century. CSIS estimates that Russia has suffered at least 325,000 killed since the full-scale invasion began.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Russian forces are losing between 30,000 and 35,000 troops killed or seriously wounded each month. Independent analysts at Frontelligence Insight report the highest levels of desertion seen so far in the war, linking the trend to Russian command tactics that prioritize assaults regardless of casualty levels.

Technology is also reshaping the battlefield. Latvian intelligence estimates that drones account for 70–80% of casualties on both sides. Constant drone surveillance and strikes make medical evacuation extremely dangerous, increasing the likelihood that wounded soldiers become fatalities.

Although Russia is recruiting roughly 35,000 new personnel each month, analysts say most replacements are offsetting current losses rather than expanding combat strength. Kofman and other experts warn this dynamic will make it increasingly difficult for Moscow to maintain prolonged offensive pressure, even as Western and Ukrainian officials report signs of potential new Russian operations in southern Ukraine.

Key Takeaways

  • Russia’s battlefield advances are minimal despite heavy casualties.

  • Monthly Russian losses may reach 30,000–35,000 killed or wounded.

  • Recruitment is barely covering losses, straining long-term offensives.

Gotta keep censoring the Russian population. Keep them in the dark regarding the war.

The UK has provided a funding package to purchase American weapons for Ukraine, joining the PURL initiative, British Defense Secretary John Healey said, according to Politico.

"I’m pleased to confirm the UK is committing £150 million (approximately $205 million - ed.) to PURL. Together, we must provide Ukraine with the critical air defense it needs in response to Putin’s brutal onslaught," Healey stated.

Two unnamed NATO diplomats said three-quarters of the alliance’s 32 members have now committed to the scheme. The PURL program (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) was launched in the summer of 2025 as a mechanism to continue supplying American weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Its key feature is that if direct US military aid stops, Washington agrees to sell its weapons and technologies, but the payment is covered by NATO allies and partner countries. Priority purchases include critical air defense systems and associated missiles.

Influential NATO country joins efforts to arm Ukraine with American weapons

Last year, Western partners allocated around $5 billion to the PURL program. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently expressed confidence that this year, alliance countries will be able to raise $15 billion for Ukraine.

Russia lost around 9,000 more troops in January than it was able to deploy to the front.

The report says Ukrainian forces have increased pressure by targeting manpower, aiming to inflict higher losses than the Kremlin can replenish.

Bloomberg previously reported that about 35,000 Russian soldiers were killed in December, roughly matching the number of new recruits that month.

Western officials told the agency that Russian forces made no significant territorial gains in January despite sustaining heavy losses.

At the current rate of advance, it could take Moscow up to two years to fully seize the Donetsk region, according to the estimates cited by Bloomberg.

A car has exploded into flames at a top secret Putin computing centre in Moscow.

The mystery blast left a Mercedes ML350 badly damaged, with grey smoke pouring out of the vehicle as it appeared to be gutted by the fire. The car was parked outside the main research computing centre of Vladimir Putin's presidential executive office in Moscow.

The IT structure, located on Ryabinovaya Street some nine miles west of the Kremlin, is responsible for the high-tech support for Putin and his government. Emergency services raced to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Initial reports said the blast was inside the car, which was unoccupied at the time. There was no initial information on the identity of the owner of the car or the cause of the explosion. Early reports said there were no casualties.

Ukraine will begin controlled exports of weapons to other countries. The first Ukrainian defense companies have already received the relevant permits, according to Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (RNBO) Rustem Umerov on Telegram.

He pointed out that as of today, the production capacity of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex exceeds $55 billion. In particular, Ukraine’s capabilities in drones, electronic warfare (EW), and reconnaissance already surpass the volume of domestic procurement.

Ukrainian unmanned systems (aerial, ground, and maritime drones) will be the priority products for sale. Some of them will be manufactured under the so-called Danish model (investments directly into Ukrainian production facilities or the creation of joint ventures).

Germany has proposed to Western allies to provide Ukraine with 35 PAC-3 missiles, designed for Patriot systems, said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at a press conference after the Ramstein meeting.

"I decided to suggest spontaneously at the end of our session that Germany is going to deliver 5 additional interceptor missiles called PAC-3 to Ukraine if other supporting countries donate a total of 30 PAC-3," he said.

"You see, Russia launches up to 20 ballistic missiles… that’s about a hundred missiles in one attack. And I don’t think there’s any air defense system in the world that is ready to combat such a large number of missiles. So our goal is to secure PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles," the Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said.

35 PAC-3 missiles for Ukraine? Germany comes up with unexpected proposal

PAC-2 vs PAC-3: what’s the difference

PAC-2 (Patriot Advanced Capability-2) and PAC-3 (Patriot Advanced Capability-3) are two different generations of air defense systems, with significant differences in how they destroy targets.

According to aviation expert Kostiantyn Kryvolap, the PAC-2 was primarily designed to intercept aircraft and cruise missiles. It uses a powerful 90-kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead that detonates near the target, destroying it with a cloud of shrapnel.

In contrast, the PAC-3 is a specialized ballistic missile interceptor that works on a hit-to-kill principle, destroying its target through direct collision at extremely high speed.

Ukraine retakes 201 sq km after Russian Starlink disruption

Ukraine has reclaimed 201 square kilometres (78 square miles) of territory from Russia in just five days, marking its largest territorial gain in more than two years, according to an analysis by Agence France-Presse based on data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The advances, recorded between Wednesday and Sunday last week, nearly match Russia’s total territorial gains for the entire month of December and represent Kyiv’s most significant battlefield success since its counteroffensive in June 2023.

Military analysts say the rapid progress likely coincided with a disruption in Russian forces’ access to Starlink, a satellite communications system widely used on the front lines. According to ISW, Ukrainian counterattacks appear to have exploited command-and-control problems triggered by the temporary shutdown, which Russian military bloggers said caused widespread communication failures.

On February 5, observers reported interference with Starlink terminals used by Russian units, following public comments by Elon Musk about taking steps to prevent the Kremlin from using the technology. Ukrainian officials have previously accused Russian forces of relying on Starlink to guide drones and bypass electronic jamming systems with high precision.

ISW analysts noted that Russian forces managed to advance on only one day—February 9—during the five-day period, while Ukrainian troops gained ground on the remaining days.

The reclaimed territory is concentrated mainly about 80 kilometres east of Zaporizhzhia, an area where Russian troops had been advancing steadily since the summer of 2025.

Despite the setback, Russia still controls approximately 19.5% of Ukrainian territory, up from 18.6% a year earlier. Roughly 7%—including Crimea and parts of the Donbas—had already been under Russian control prior to the full-scale invasion launched in February 2022.

Key Takeaways

  • Ukraine reclaimed 201 sq km in five days, its biggest gain since mid-2023.

  • Analysts link the advance to a disruption in Russian Starlink communications.

  • Most gains occurred east of Zaporizhzhia, a key southern front.

Ukraine Drones Hit Oil Depot Deep Inside Russia

Ukraine’s Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has carried out one of its deepest drone strikes inside Russian territory to date, hitting an oil depot nearly 500 kilometers from Ukraine’s border. According to SBU sources, long-range drones from the agency’s Special Operations Center “Alpha” struck the Velikolukskaya oil depot in Russia’s Pskov region, close to the border with Belarus.

Local reports say at least four explosions were recorded at the facility, followed by a large fire that engulfed fuel storage tanks. Employees at nearby industrial sites were reportedly evacuated as flames spread. Anti-drone nets installed over the tanks failed to prevent the strike.

The Velikolukskaya oil depot, located about 50 kilometers from the Belarusian border, is owned by Pskovnefteprodukt LLC and stores diesel, gasoline, and other petroleum products. Ukrainian officials say the facility supports Russian military logistics.

An SBU source said the agency is systematically targeting infrastructure that supplies fuel to Russian forces, arguing that such strikes directly reduce Russia’s ability to conduct combat operations, move troops, and redeploy reserves.

The attack follows a series of recent Ukrainian drone operations against energy and military-linked sites. On February 17, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, along with logistics hubs in occupied Ukrainian territories. Separate drone strikes recently hit the Metafrax chemical plant in Perm Krai, which produces materials used in explosives.

Earlier, SBU drones also struck the Temp oil depot in Rybinsk, triggering another major fire. Ukrainian officials say the campaign highlights Kyiv’s growing long-range strike capabilities.

Ukrainian drones struck an industrial site deep inside Russia on Saturday, and a Russian news channel reported the target was a key state-owned missile factory.

The attack took place in Russia’s Udmurt Republic, leaving 11 injured, three of whom were hospitalized, according to a Telegram post by Sergei Bagin, the local health minister.

An unofficial Russian news channel on Telegram, Astra, said Ukrainian drones struck the Votkinsk Machine Building Plant, a major state defense enterprise. Astra said its claim was based on an analysis of footage from local residents.

I wonder if an agreement was penned offering an end of hostilities with current land held stay as it is which side would take the deal? Seems both sides are akin to sluggers in a ring both battered to near comatose throwing bombs at each other barely attempting to block incoming punches.
