Manuel Maria Trindade, 22, was standing in front of the bull at Lisbon's Campo Pequeno and then ran towards it to provoke the 700kg animal into charging.

However, when he attempted to seize one of the horns, he was flung into the air and then crushed against a wall as thousands of spectators looked on.

Emergency paramedics swiftly attended to him and it is believed that he was initially stabilised despite sustaining serious head injuries. He was rushed to Sao Jose Hospital and placed into an induced coma but sadly, his condition worsened and he passed away on August 23.

Sick "art form", cruelty to the animals. Karma sometimes happens here.

The art form Mr Trindade was practising is not the same as Spanish bullfighting, where the bull is killed.  Portugal has outlawed the killing of the bull.

But the whole nature of this Portuguese style of bullfighting is very different.

It's probably the least cruel form of bullfighting you can get.

The bulls aren't killed in front of the people, but afterwards by butchers. Bulls that aren't wounded mortally are left to participate another day. It's what I thought also until I looked it up .................https://www.esdaw.eu/bullfighting---portugal.html

ESDAW looks like an animal rights organization that seeks to outlaw all kinds of bullfighting. Let's say their information is true, and bulls are eventually slaughtered, one still has to set that against the ancient cultural practice and art of bullfighting in Portugal, which has for instance brought about a form of bullfighting on horseback that is  unique.

Arguably these forms of cultural art are worth retaining, even at the cost of some animals being slaughtered. For if they were not retained humanity would lose a beautiful cultural event that cannot easily be replaced.

So your earlier statement is not correct? You should have at least added 'in the arena '.

"Portugal has outlawed the killing of the bull."
