Blood in urine

Featured Replies

A recent urine test showed Blood 1+.

Based on

Red Blood Cells 1 - 2 / HPF ( Normal range 0 - 1 HPF)

Does this mean a doctor or hospital visit needed.?

Blood test wbc and rbc at the lower end of normal, I do have anaemia from last year's chemo and radiotherapy.

Repeat the test

Do not ignore the symptom. It could be kidney damage, or bladder cancer. Consult a doctor.

OTOH, it may be a side-effect of the chemo and radiotherapy.

Better to know than not know.

Hypopharynx cancer Sheryl. The treatment was a year ago and I've been on 3 monthly scans since then, but as all seemed clear the next one will be 6 months. The pre scan blood test  does not include blood sugar so I went to Lifecare in Pattaya for their standard check which includes blood sugar and also a urine test. The lady there didn't see it as a problem but blood in the urine (not visible) made me a bit nervous.

The amount of blood is small, this what is called microscopic hematuria.

This can have many causes including;

Kidney disease

Urinary Tract Infection

Enlarged (benign)  prostate

Urinary tract stones

Vigorous exercise (including sex)

Cancer of bladder  kidneys or prostate

Anticoagulant/antiplatlet medications

Any disorder that impairs normal blood coagulation (this can also be side effect of some types of chemo and of radiation). Though if both are a year ago, not very likely now.

And sometimes no cause can be found.

I suggest you see a urologist to be on the safe side.  They will want to repeat the urinalysis at the hospital which is good idea, so avoid vigorous exercise and sex for 24-48 hours begore the visit. They may also want to do a complete blood count including platlets and possibly a PSA.

Thanks Sheryl, I took the lady to be saying it was from the anaemia.

Thie anaemia seems to be a side effect of the chemo etc, never had it before that.

Anemia does not cause blood in the urine.

Low platlet count can, so can many other things as previously pisted.

Staff at labs are not reliable sources of information on meaning of results. The most they can tell you is whether a result is within or outside normal limits.  And clerical staff, may not even know that.

I don' t want to scare you bit it could be a sign pf bladder cancer. Go see a doctor.

Yes could be a sign of a few cancers, that was my first thought. Thanks for your reply.

Thank you Sheryl and sorry to have bothered you, I will be seeing the ENT doc and the oncologist soon so I'll  leave it to them.  Blood in the urine was just a bit unsettling.

Thanks again.

i had blood in urine recently, had to have a kidney stone removed...

If you are over age 40 and blood in urine is significant and not going away…Get a PSA test pronto! The reason I know is it happened to me at age 57. I had stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. After 1 month in the hospital on heparin, blood tests, and medical imaging, I was diagnosed. That 1 month cost 200000 dollars.

There are too many causes to mention here. (urinary tract, prostate, kidneys, exercises, bladder, medication, cancer and more)

A doctor visit is a must.

Honestly, I find some articles a bit hard to swallow. Guy has had chemo and radiotherapy, then comes on here and asks if he should see a doctor, after urine test shows blood...who the hell ignores such a test, that would have been/ or not requested by his doctor.

Thai tests aren't reliable.

No visible blood, just the test result saying there was.

Mods please close this one. People respond with good intentions and it goes to the top again. For those who have responded thanks again, and as I stated earlier I do have things in hand.

My urine test showed 3-5 RC in urine. Ultrasound: no stone, but enlarged prostate (38ml, PSA 1.02). This (blood in urine) won't happen to all men with enlarged prostate, but some.
The last test I had it was reduced to 1-2 that was by taking 6 months medications for prostate.
Not always a bad sign, but better find the reason. Do 2nd urine test if still the same.
