In a decisive move against illegal gambling, the Department of Provincial Administration (DPA) carried out a significant raid on a well-known gambling den in Don Mueang, Bangkok. The operation, named Singh Prab Payas and led by Phumtham Wechayachai, resulted in the capture of over 200 gamblers at the legendary venue situated in Soi Songprapha 1.

This establishment had garnered a notorious reputation due to its sophisticated setup, offering multiple entrances, designated parking, shuttle services, air-conditioned gaming rooms, and refreshments. It attracted a steady stream of gamblers with activities like Dragon Tiger and Fantan from 10am to 6am daily. Officials estimate the venue's illegal operations generate between 300 and 500 million baht (around THB 274 million to THB 457 million) each month, showcasing swift cash flows of 3 to 5 million baht (approximately THB 27.4 million to THB 45.7 million) in mere hours.

Originally a synthetic grass football field, the locale was transformed into a bustling gambling hub. During the raid, a substantial quantity of servers was confiscated, spotlighting the extent of the operation. Now, the DPA is scrutinising whether the site's construction and land use permits comply with legal standards. Authorities have also warned of strict action against any officials who may have been negligent or corrupt.

An unexpected twist in the proceedings is the involvement of Anuwat, the venue's owner, who is already under multiple arrest warrants for gambling offences. Nonetheless, the day-to-day operations were managed by another individual whose identity is known to the authorities. The investigation is also tracking the ownership of 17 bank accounts used for gambling transactions, all registered under a single name.

Police Major General Jesada Suaisom, Commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 2, joined forces with officers from Don Mueang Police Station for the raid. He emphasised that despite previous crackdowns and arrests, the establishment consistently returned to operations. On 26th August, police efforts to secure a search warrant were thwarted when the court denied the request, leaving enforcement to the DPA’s special unit.

Anuwat remains elusive, with investigators pursuing leads suggesting he may have fled to northern Thailand or possibly a neighbouring country. The gambling den has become infamous as a resilient operation, surviving more than 20 raids over five years. Anuwat himself has been convicted nine times, with a cumulative prison sentence exceeding 13 years. Further legal battles await, with eight cases under appeal, two awaiting prosecutor decisions, and two additional arrest warrants outstanding.

This latest action underscores Thailand's ongoing battle with illegal gambling, an industry that continues to challenge legal boundaries and enforcement efforts. The authorities remain committed to clamping down on such operations, ensuring those accountable face the full force of the law.

A well known gambling den... blind local police ?

If they arrested 200 people then it's not like it was just set up and advertised online apps etc and with that amount of people you can be sure it was noticed by police long before this but nothing done for a reason.

Wouldn't replacing the local police higher-ups help? They are clearly being paid to give the casino a heads up before a raid.
