Police have arrested two suspects accused of abducting and killing a apps driver in Chiang Mai before attempting to cover up the crime by burning his body inside a car.

The charred remains of 32-year-old Kunasin Intayos, from Ban Luang Nuea, were discovered in the back seat of a white car found ablaze on the Pang Hai–Mae Ton road near Doi Luang in Doi Saket district during the early hours of 29 August.

Initial reports suggested the car may have crashed before catching fire. However, police now believe the incident was a deliberate attempt to conceal a murder.

According to investigators, the victim, who worked as a Grab driver, was allegedly abducted following an altercation in the Mae Jo area, around 20 kilometres from where the burned-out vehicle was discovered.

The suspects are accused of transporting his body in the car with the intention of dumping it in a ravine. But after the vehicle was involved in a collision en route, the pair allegedly doused it with petrol and set it alight in an effort to destroy evidence.

The victim’s belonging were later identified by relatives, though DNA testing at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital is being carried out for final confirmation due to the extent of the burns and damage to the body.

Police Major General Yutthana Kaenchan, commander of Chiang Mai provincial police, confirmed the arrests and said officers from Mae Jo and Doi Saket stations had worked jointly to track down the suspects. Both men are now facing charges including murder, abduction and destruction of evidence.
