Agree, doesn't even have a Makro 🙄

 

Lovely area, but I think after a year I'd get bored.   Not even mentioning smog season, and was so bad when visiting one time, they closed the airport, as too smoggy to land, and could barely see the hill / runway from the wat on the hill.

IIRC Mae Hong Son does have a KFC. The range of restaurants is very limited.

 

I understand if a senior official fouled up in Bangkok, Mae Hong Son was their next posting.

Mae Hong Son is worth to visit, I was positively surprised and met some local expats there. But the major drawback is its remoteness, the next city is Chiang Mai and it takes several  hours to get there. And that drive is not for the fainthearted with sharp curves at every corner. A paradise for bikers.  Medical facilities are also  limited and I guess in serious cases you have to go to CM for treatment. Amazing landscape but very quiet. It is too quiet for most foreigners.

It has become a partying place for backpackers, I believe, as for living there, one has to go and check for himself I guess.

Hard to get there, the 108 was washed out in the Tuesday floods/landslides.
