Authorities in Khon Kaen have raided a well-known bar in the city centre after uncovering a late-night drug party involving dozens of young men and women using so-called “Happy Water”, a cocktail laced with narcotics.

The raid, carried out at around 06:00 on 30 August, was led by Mr. Chinnakorn Kaenkong, district chief of Mueang Khon Kaen, in coordination with Pol Col Yosawat Kaewsuebthanit, superintendent of Mueang Khon Kaen police station. Acting on a warrant from the Khon Kaen Provincial Court, officials searched the premises of “I Hug Izakaya Bar”, located on Thepdamnern Road, following public complaints.

Inside, police found four karaoke rooms in operation with 25 customers, 11 men (including one under 20) and 14 women, along with five staff members. All were tested for drugs. Results showed 18 positive for methamphetamine, five for ketamine and seven clear of drugs.

Investigators believe the venue was selling “Happy Water”, a street term for a mix of methamphetamine and ketamine disguised as flavoured drinks. Officials also alleged that the bar was serving alcohol beyond legal hours.

During the raid, officers seized quantities of both methamphetamine and ketamine, along with related paraphernalia. The cashier on duty, identified as Ms. Sunanthita,  was detained for questioning, while the manager and owner were not present at the time.

Authorities confirmed the establishment had been operating without a licence under Thailand’s Entertainment Venue Act of 1966 and had failed to prevent drug use on the premises. Charges will be brought against those responsible, with police vowing further action against similar establishments.

Mr. Chinnakorn said the operation was part of a wider campaign against narcotics in entertainment venues. “This raid shows we will not tolerate bars being used as fronts for drug parties that target young people,” he said.
