If you struggle to lose fat and can't help but wonder why, the culprit could be hiding in your daily breakfast.

Many people roll out of bed and start the day with cereal, bagels, muffins, or something equally sugary and starchy. That’s one of the worst things you can do if your goal is fat loss, according to metabolic scientist Ben Bikman, Ph.D.

After fasting overnight, your insulin levels are naturally low, which allows your body to tap into stored fat for energy. But the moment you eat a high-carb breakfast, insulin spikes, shutting down fat burning and locking you into sugar-burning mode.

"Breakfast is almost just a dessert nowadays all over the world where it is just like pure sugar and starch," Bikman says. "The last thing you want to do is spike your insulin with a starchy sugary breakfast

2 to 3 cups of coffee until I take a giant dump.  From there I eat carbs.  A whole grain bagel smothered with natural peanut butter, banana, and some honey.  Then, I walk intensely for one hour and every other day the walk is followed by a 45 minute weight workout.

I think every body is different.   I have tried the high protein in the morning and I get a headache or lose energy during my morning workouts. My blood numbers are always good and blood pressure low so my morning routine seems to work well for me.

 I take a giant dump....Way Too much Information,Just Keep that to Yourself O.K. ??

Very true that all those processed foods sold in bakerys are lethal for the heart, for cholesterol levels or can even cause diabetis. Far to much fat (butter oil) or sugar in all the ready to eat stuff sold at the bakery.

But then, people don't want to understand until the body rings the alarm bells and it can be a bit too late.

At 50 (male) my routine is:

  • Breakfast: Small slice of wholegrain bread with half avocado or low-fat cheese, black coffee with little skim milk.

  • Lunch: 1 egg, fresh salad with olive oil dressing, half yam or small potato, pickles or olives.

  • Dinner: Same as breakfast, chamomile tea instead of coffee.

  • Exercise: 6 days/week, 1 hour (20 min aerobics + 40 min stationary bike).

Gained 5kg during a trip 2 months ago, still can't lose weight. What am I doing wrong?

  • 2 weeks later...

You're already doing way better than most people in terms of consumption and exercise, but if it isn't working then something needs to change. Avocados and eggs are excellent.

'Intermittent-fasting' would be my primary suggestion. This does not mean starving yourself. What it means is adjusting the timing of your meals to reduce the window of daily consumption. E.g. first meal at 10am then last meal at 7pm, with lunch some time in-between. This would give a you a 16/8 intermittent fast, allowing your insulin levels to reduce during the fasting period when you are not eating. Over time you could tighten that window to 18/6, at least on some days. What this does is allow your insulin level to significantly lower during fasting, which is a great thing.

Low or baseline insulin - during fasting = fat burning mode.
Increased insulin - after consumption = fat storage mode.

Keep hydrated with water during fasting periods but also maintain electrolytes (non-flavoured), especially around exercise.

Since June I've lost around 8kgs (down from 96kg) and in addition to increased movement (4-mile walk 6 days a week) I put this success primarily down to intermittent-fasting. Low carb, high protein, zero sugars, zero fruit juices and fruit in general, zero junk food.

If I were to be picky about what YOU are eating, then I would not eat any bread and not choose any low-fat products or skimmed milk. Fat is good for the body as it satiates and does not automatically become fat in your body. Also replace olive oil with extra virgin olive oil and drizzle that on most things you eat and add some sea salt too (primary electrolyte).

Also, increase protein intake. Add chicken (with skin if possible) and many more eggs (the perfect food), leafy greens and red meat and fish.

Avoid ALL sugary drinks, processed anything or anything with flavourings, colourings and additives or which is processed, also anything cooked in seed oils, especially deep fried.

Eggs (organic) are good, very good, and the best ... DO NOT buy (ultra-)transformed products ... First rule : what you cant find as it in the nature, don't eat !

ALL TRUE ! Great answer. Fruits are not that bad, small quantity and to eat, not too make juice. EAT your calories, DO NOT drink it.
Also, DO NOT eat your carbs NAKED... always add some vegetables, fibers, whatever, if possible before or during your meal.

I have tried to lose weight for ages but I only lose one kilo and put it back on again. On rising I drink 2 cups of tea without sugar. I then walk at least 90 minutes every day at a steady pace. Breakfast time I eat a boiled egg, tomato and lettuce with 2 slices of sourdough bread. Sometime I eat instant oats, unsweetened yoghurt and fruit instead, no toast. Lunch I eat chicken or fish with steamed vegetables or salad. In never eat dinner but I drink one large bottle of beer. So what am I doing wrong to lose weight?

I don't see any meat in the photos.

You mean that pinkish stuff?

That's not meat.
