A group of victims yesterday lodged complaints at Hua Mak Police Station, Bangkok, after being duped by a woman who allegedly rented cars under a false identity and then smuggled them for resale across the border, causing heavy losses.

One of the victims, 41-year-old Mr Nirote, revealed that he had signed a rental agreement with a woman identifying herself as Ms Phakakrong, aged 32. She rented his grey Mitsubishi, registration from Bangkok, claiming she needed the car to travel to Kanchanaburi and Suphan Buri provinces.

However, when Mr Nirote later checked the vehicle’s GPS system, he discovered that the car had been taken to Myanmar. He attempted to contact the renter, but his calls went unanswered.

Investigations have since revealed that Phakakrong was a false name used with a forged ID card. The suspect’s real identity is reported to be Ms Yupaphan.

More victims soon came forward, stating that they too had been deceived in the same way. Some managed to recover their cars, but only after paying so-called “ransom” fees, while others have yet to locate their vehicles.

The victims eventually set up a sting operation, pretending to arrange another rental, and managed to apprehend the woman themselves before handing her over to police.

Police confirmed they are questioning the suspect and victims. Charges of fraud and impersonation are expected to be filed as investigations continue.

Yeah, attempting to call the thief.

Would have been funny if they picked up the phone: "I'm in Myanmar now with the stolen vehicle. Catch me if you can. Hahaha!"
