After online check in , do you still need to go to check in desk

Featured Replies

Apologies if this is obvious to frequent fliers but I have just done an online check in for the first time for our Emirates flight to London.  I think we can now proceed straight to security check then immigration.

However , the internet points out that we might still need to go to a check in counter to check that my wifes visa is ok for her to fly. Anyone have experience of this ? Don't want to get half way through then sent back.  Thanks in advance.

Not unless you have luggage

Cheers. Only hand luggage.

Emirates' site says OLCI is possible for the UK, provided you complete the API process.

Advanced passenger information

Can I use online check-in if a country requires Advance Passenger Information (API)?

If there are any issues, she might get dinged at the gate, but they'll sort it out there.

Yes, as far as I know API is required if the passenger has no visa. Where a passenger has a current valid visa it is not required.

Well...will get to airport with time in hand and as you day , if there is an issue, they can sort it at the gate. If I see there is no long queue at the check in counters I will quickly double check with them.

Thanks

Because your wife (assuming she is Thai ?) needs to have her Visa cross checked you will need verification.

You have both checked in online already, though for many countries this is simply a 'streamlining' process (all you have really done is answer security questions already and chosen seats) - you'll still require a human verification for your Wife's visa.  The 'boarding pass' you will have been issued may not actually be a boarding pass, but a 'confirmation pass' (something slightly different).

At Suvarnabumi there are 'Self Check-in' counters...    Emirates have these and you'll save plenty of time not queuing as most people are luddites and prefer not to use them.

At the Self check-in counters, there is always a member of staff to verify the visa and confirm with their own 'code' (log-in).

Hand-luggage only makes this a lot quicker - no need for baggage drop.

I have recently been to the UK with Emirates and following online check in the system would not print the boarding cards, message said to go to desk for visa check, my wife.

On the return journey journey no problem and I printed the boarding cards. bit of a waste of time, still have to hand in baggage and they gave normal  boarding cards. That was at gatwick.

Last October I came back on my own again with Emirates via Heathrow and baggage drop was self service and I hadn't printed the boarding cards from previous experience. I just said the boarding card email never arrived and he sent me to the business class check-in. Real bonus, no queue.

Bottom line, if visa check required they will tell you to go to desk. Coming back my visa hasn't been checked for some time now.

Yes....we will see. It actually says boarding pass at the top of the printout for both myself and my wife. On the online app it also says for both of us ' already checked in '  I went down the online check in road just in case we were late arriving at the airport. I prefer the check in counters since the staff can both check our passports and our carry on luggage . ( they are withing the official limits in size and weight ) We'll see how the time goes on Wednesday morning.

The print out looks like this

Emirates first class is awesome.  Great Caviar.  Enjoy it.

To be sure, on arrival at the Airport I would ask Emirates information Staff at their information counter at Swampy airport at the end of the regular check-in counters of Emirates. As we have seen popular airliners change rules overnight and above all, this being Thailand where rules can merge as the sun rises and be discarded at sunset...always double check and never assume anything.

Do you also have boarding passes from Dubai to London ?

If you do, its quite clear... You are checked-in and can head straight to security.

Yes. Through to London. To be sure I will follow Middle Aged Grouches suggestion. Didn't know they had a dedicated information desk. Very useful as probably no queue.

At the airport now. If you have completed online check in you STILL have to check in at a check in counter , both Thai and other nationalities. Only advantage is that there is a dedicated queue for those that have checked in online which is much shorter than the queue for those that haven't.  Saves 10 minutes or so. My wife was worried that her carry on luggage was a bit overweight but they will cut you some slack for this minor infringe.

Got an upgrade from Business on my last trip to Cairo, sadly on the shorter DXB-CAI leg, very nice although I wouldn't pay my own wonga for it.

There were a lot of confused passengers in First, I suspect we were selected so they could train cabin crew :whistling:

Of course I didn't strip the cubicle of everything not nailed down (they even give you a tote to put your loot in) :whistling:

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
