UN Warns Myanmar Crisis Echoes 2017 Rohingya Atrocities

The United Nations has sounded a grave alarm over Myanmar’s deepening humanitarian catastrophe, warning that recent military actions bear chilling resemblance to the 2017 atrocities against the Rohingya. A new report from the UN Human Rights Office, released Tuesday in Geneva, documents widespread killings, torture, and forced displacement—particularly in Rakhine State.

Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar’s military has killed over 7,100 civilians, a third of them women and children. More than 29,000 people have been arrested for political reasons, with over 22,000 still held without fair trial. The escalation of violence in Rakhine has displaced hundreds of thousands, including 150,000 Rohingya who fled to Bangladesh since late 2023, joining nearly a million already in refugee camps.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk condemned the military’s “systematic patterns of indiscriminate attacks,” including airstrikes, arson, and denial of aid. He also criticised the Arakan Army, which now controls much of northern Rakhine, for committing abuses such as forced recruitment and extortion. Both groups, he said, operate with near-total impunity.

The report highlights new and disturbing tactics: chemical-laced explosives and armed paramotors used to target civilian areas. One airstrike in May killed 24 people at a school, including 16 girls and two teachers. Since 2021, over 640 attacks on schools have been recorded, part of a broader campaign to instil fear and dismantle public infrastructure.

Despite a declared ceasefire following a deadly earthquake in March, the military launched over 550 further attacks, killing hundreds more. The UN estimates that nearly a third of Myanmar’s population—15.2 million people—now faces acute food insecurity, driven by conflict, economic collapse, and natural disasters.

Türk renewed his call for the UN Security Council to refer Myanmar’s case to the International Criminal Court, urging member states to act decisively. “It is past time for Myanmar’s people to see meaningful action,” he said, “and for those responsible to be held to account.”

The report paints a harrowing picture of a nation trapped in a cycle of violence, with civilians bearing the brunt. As the world watches, the question remains: will it act?

United Nations sounding a "Grave Alarm" is about as far as it will go!!!

By supporting a murderous corrupt regime allows China & to a lesser extent Russia to rape and pillage Myanmar of its resources to the detriment of the Burmese people while the rest of the world does nothing that has any significance or meaning! The chinese government is fully aware of its peoples involvement in most of the scam centres along their shared borders and whilst it voices its opposition this is merely to appease the world, these centers still exist, scamming people of billions from all over the world, human trafficking, drug smuggling, organ donors and more. The Junta gets a cut and the chinese and other scammers make a fortune and the rest of the world just looks on!!

Thailand is complicit with many of the regime practices and dances to their tune knowing full well the circumstances to the extent that it allows the regime to dictate foreign worker policies in Thailand to the benefit of the junta and again to the detriment of the people. Whilst countries like China, Russia, India, Iran & even Singapore supply them weapons to murder the Burmese people, Australia has mining interests and colludes with the Junta along with other western countries.

Everything is for financial gain, scam centres and corruption is out of control, what has happened to peoples ethics & morals, the world has gone completely crazy!!
