Vietnam captivated the world on its 80th National Day with grand displays of military prowess and national pride, drawing widespread international media attention.

On Tuesday, Hanoi's streets came alive as Vietnam marked eight decades since declaring independence. The largest-ever celebrations featured over 40,000 military personnel and civilians, surpassing the previous record of 30,000 participants set in 1985. Tanks, drones, and missile batteries rolled through the streets, while planes and helicopters soared above, as reported by AFP.

The celebrations highlighted Vietnam's transformation into a global manufacturing powerhouse. For many, the event celebrated both the past and present achievements of the nation. Vu Thi Trang, a 19-year-old student, expressed her gratitude: "I am grateful for the sacrifices of the previous generation, so that we have peace and freedom to grow up." Trang secured her spot to watch the parade 30 hours in advance.

The parade resonated particularly with Vietnam's younger generation. As AP reported, viral videos showed youthful spectators in red shirts with yellow stars energetically cheering, some sipping iced boba tea. The streets of Hanoi were adorned with flags, and balconies displayed banners, as giant screens broadcasted the event.

Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, 22, shared her sentiments: "It’s something to be proud of. Our grandparents fought for this. Now life is better."

Bloomberg highlighted the light-hearted moments during the rehearsals, with soldiers flashing heart-shaped hand gestures, adding a human touch to the choreographed display. Notably, the event included a naval display for the first time, featuring submarines and missile frigates.

Alongside Soviet-era tanks, more modern military hardware was on show, including domestically developed drones, cruise missiles, and advanced military communications systems.

International media echoed the sense of unity and pride observed during the event. Russia’s Gazeta Pravda commented on Vietnam's new socio-economic and political landscape, acknowledging the revolutionary changes led by the nation's top leaders. Kommersant described the parade as the largest military display in decades, featuring advanced equipment and showcasing Vietnam's determination to protect its sovereignty.

The parade in Hanoi attracted international contingents, including representatives from Russia and China, underlining Vietnam's strategic alliances. Kommersant quoted General Secretary To Lam, who emphasised the country's commitment to safeguarding its independence and territorial integrity.

Vietnam's 80th National Day was a resounding success, blending tradition with modernity and symbolising a nation proud of its past and optimistic about its future. The event, with its spectacular military displays and vibrant public participation, reaffirmed Vietnam's place on the global stage, celebrating its achievements and unity as never before.

This parade must have been impressive.

I have visited the Square in Hanoi and it is impressive on a normal weekday. The Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh dominates the scene. (my photo)
