An inter-provincial bus travelling from Pattaya to Ubon Ratchathani collided with the rear of a lorry during heavy rain on the morning of 5 September, leaving 18 passengers injured.

Police at Phanom Sarakham Police Station received reports of the accident at the U-turn near Ban Rai Don, Kok Khon sub-district, Chachoengsao, on Route 304. The crash involved a Sri Mongkol Tour bus carrying 36 passengers and a 18-wheeler lorry.

Rescue workers from Phanom Foundation rushed to the scene, where they found the bus had careered off the road and into a ditch. The front section of the bus was severely damaged, trapping the driver and a passenger seated directly behind him. Emergency crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to free them.

Nearby, the lorry had also come to rest on the opposite side of the carriageway. Fortunately, its driver escaped unhurt.

Eighteen bus passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts to more serious trauma. All were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Heavy downpours at the time of the crash hampered rescue efforts, forcing responders to work in challenging conditions.

Initial investigations suggest that the rain-soaked, slippery road surface may have caused the bus driver to lose control before crashing into the back of the lorry, due to the speed he was travelling. Police are interviewing those involved and gathering evidence as part of their inquiry.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution during the current spate of heavy rain, which has led to hazardous driving conditions across the region.

Astounding to read that these people were keeping precise records 300 years ago.

Yet their descendants don't know how to drive a bus in heavy rain...
