Maha Sarakham police have arrested a woman wanted on multiple fraud-related charges, in a dramatic twist, one of the arresting officers was her own husband, an officer with the provincial force.

The case centres on Ms. Thitichayan, known as “Tookta”, 46, from Surin province, who was detained on 5 September under a warrant issued by Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Court on 2 April for offences of embezzlement.

Investigations revealed that Ms. Thitichayan, together with associates, had allegedly deceived members of the public by collecting fees for medical outreach uniforms and professional certificates, as well as by running a car pawn scheme in which victims paid redemption money but never had their vehicles returned. Reports further suggest that state-issued firearms may also have been sold.

Public frustration over the alleged scams has been mounting on social media for months, with victims accusing local police of inaction. “If they weren’t highly connected, the case would have moved forward long ago,” one netizen wrote. Others claimed to have filed complaints as far back as last year with no progress.

On the morning of 5 September, police finally moved in. Ms. Thitichayan was spotted standing by the roadside in front of Maha Sarakham Provincial Police headquarters on Chaeang Sanit Road. Officers from the investigative division approached, presented the court warrant, and took her into custody. She was transferred to the investigation office for formal booking before being sent to Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Court to face trial.

Remarkably, one of the officers who signed the arrest report was her husband, a member of Police Region 191 in Maha Sarakham. Reports indicate that he had no choice but to participate in the arrest.

The officer has since been questioned by his superiors after allegations emerged that some of the embezzled funds were transferred to his bank account. He has denied any involvement, claiming that victims pressured his wife through him because of his position.

The investigation into whether the police officer benefited from the fraudulent schemes remains ongoing.
