In the heart of Pattaya, a dramatic yet safe resolution unfolded as local officers captured a giant python that had found its way onto a busy city footpath. The incident, reported around 9am on Monday, drew attention from locals and tourists alike, with the Pattaya City Radio Centre responding swiftly to calls of concern.

Officers from the Pattaya City Disaster Prevention Department arrived promptly at the scene to contain the situation. A group of motorbike taxi drivers and intrigued tourists had gathered, keeping a prudent distance while documenting the unusual event on their devices. The snake, a reticulated python over 3 metres long and weighing beyond 30 kilogrammes, had attempted to slither through a fence, becoming stuck due to its expanded midsection—presumably full from a recent meal.

As the officers approached, the python displayed aggression, striking out as they attempted to secure its head with a noose. "The python was quite feisty," a disaster prevention officer explained. "Given its size and power, capturing it required care and precision."

The operation, lasting roughly 30 minutes, saw officers and the massive reptile locked in a tense standoff—all under the watchful eyes of a supportive crowd. Cheers erupted as the team successfully wrestled the snake into a sack, ensuring neither it nor anyone nearby suffered harm.

Following the capture, the python was relocated safely to a more appropriate natural environment, helping to maintain order and security for Pattaya’s residents and guests. Officials took this opportunity to remind the public that wildlife encounters, albeit uncommon in urban spaces, are possible near green areas or waterways. Caution and respect should always be exercised.

Indigenous to Southeast Asia, reticulated pythons boast impressive dimensions but are typically non-venomous. While their sheer size can present dangers, the adept handling by trained personnel ensures safety for both humans and wildlife.

Acknowledging the role of the community, officials commended the public for their cooperative behaviour during the incident. "The situation was high-tension, but everyone’s calm presence allowed us to manage the task without incident. It serves as a valuable lesson in handling urban wildlife encounters with respect and caution."

This incident in Pattaya, while rare, is a testament to the importance of preparedness and teamwork in ensuring safety and harmony between human communities and local wildlife. With the successful relocation of the python, both the public and the snake can continue their lives undisturbed, a true reflection of balance in this vibrant city.

Too bad. A few of those could put a dent in the rat population.

Dare we mention feral soi dogs!

Very few of these reptiles in my wife’s home region as they are eaten at every opportunity.
