Bomb disposal units in Thailand have discovered 2,470 mines and unexploded munitions along the border with Cambodia. This clearance effort follows a ceasefire agreement initiated on July 29, aimed at reducing tensions and potential harm in the region. Between August 10 and September 11, searches in Phu Makua, Chong An Ma, and Chong Bok revealed various explosives including anti-personnel mines, anti-tank mines, and artillery shells.

The affected sites, Phu Makua in Si Sa Ket and Chong An Ma and Chong Bok in Ubon Ratchathani, are critical because of their proximity to the border. The Royal Thai Army reported past incidents of injuries due to Cambodian landmines, with fourteen soldiers wounded between July 16 and August 27 during patrols. This hazardous situation highlights ongoing conflicts and the urgent need for mine-clearing initiatives, as six soldiers have already lost a leg due to these explosives.

Experts stress the importance of continuous mine clearance to protect military personnel and civilians. The Thailand Mine Action Centre remains actively engaged in scanning these regions for leftover munitions, emphasizing safety measures for those patrolling or living near these precarious areas. The discovery of mines points to long-standing border issues, and their safe disposal is deemed crucial for regional stability.

Future operations will focus on thorough landmine clearance, aiming to prevent further injuries. Both nations recognize the necessity of these actions to foster peace and safety along their borders. Continuous cooperation and dialogue are expected to strengthen bilateral relations and ensure a safer environment for all involved.

Key Takeaways

  • Bomb disposal teams have cleared 2,470 mines in Thailand since July.
