Rescue teams in Lopburi saved two men from a near-fatal ordeal after they were trapped in a  groundwater well on 15 September 2025. One man, reportedly hallucinating after taking methamphetamine, jumped into the well and a neighbour who tried to save him was also left stranded at the bottom. Both were eventually pulled out in an exhausted state and taken to hospital.

The incident occurred in Moo 1, Khok Tum subdistrict, Mueang district, Lopburi, at the home of the first man’s parents. Rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation responded after receiving an emergency call. On arrival, they found the two men floating in the cold water, clinging to a plastic container to stay afloat, with oxygen levels low, due to the depth of the well and poor air circulation..

Initial rescue attempts included pumping air from a fan into the well to prevent suffocation and sending a rescuer down by rope. However, the depth of the water and the victims’ weakening condition made the operation difficult. The team then coordinated with a crane operator, using a sling to lower rescuers who eventually managed to bring both men up safely.

The men were identified as Mr Pichet, 44, the son of the homeowners and a neighbour aged about 30. Both were exhausted and short of breath when rescued. They were immediately transported to hospital, where doctors confirmed their conditions had stabilised, though they remain under observation.

Local officials provided further context. Village headman Mr Manu said Pichet’s parents reported that he had argued with his wife before suddenly leaping into the well. A neighbour followed to help but became trapped as well, prompting the urgent call for rescue.

Pichet’s mother, Ms Noi, 68, told authorities her son had been using methamphetamine for several days, leaving him unable to sleep and increasingly agitated. On the morning of the incident, following another confrontation with his wife, he ran directly to the well and jumped in before anyone could intervene. His neighbour’s attempt to help nearly resulted in a double tragedy until rescuers managed to pull both men out.

The rescue operation, described by witnesses as extremely difficult, required ingenuity and teamwork to succeed. Community members expressed gratitude to the rescuers for saving both lives.
