A man was killed and his wife critically injured when an oil freight train struck their pickup truck at a level crossing in Phitsanulok’s Phrom Phiram district early on 18 September. The impact threw the vehicle into a canal, leaving the truck destroyed. Police and rescue teams confirmed that the couple were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to hospital, but the man later died.

The collision occurred at 04:45 when Phrom Phiram police were alerted to the crash at a railway crossing in Moo 1, Ban Nong Tom, Wong Khong subdistrict. Officers, together with Prasat Boonsathan Foundation and Phrom Phiram rescue units, arrived to find a grey Isuzu D-Max with registration number from Phitsanulok submerged in a roadside canal. The train involved was an oil freight service heading to Chiang Mai.

Rescuers identified the victims as 35-year-old Denchai Tokudwian from Chaiyaphum and his wife, 35-year-old Juthamas Tokudwian. Denchai was found unconscious and without a pulse. Despite CPR and emergency transfer to Phrom Phiram Hospital, he was pronounced dead. Juthamas sustained a torn wound on her left arm and severe chest pain and was later transferred to Phutthachinnarat Hospital in Phitsanulok for specialist treatment.

Initial checks showed that the railway crossing where the collision occurred had no barrier and was in an open area. Police believe the pickup may have attempted to cross but was hit directly in the middle by the oncoming train, causing the vehicle to be hurled into the canal. Investigators gathered evidence and will continue questioning witnesses to establish the precise cause.

Authorities are expected to review safety at the site, given the absence of protective barriers. The investigation will determine whether additional safety measures or signals are required to prevent similar incidents.
