Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, is positioning himself as a potential successor to Keir Starmer amid growing discontent within the Labour Party.

Burnham's recent activities, including the launch of the left-wing campaign group Mainstream, have fueled speculation about his leadership ambitions. The group advocates for policies such as wealth taxes, nationalising utilities, and ending the two-child benefit cap, reflecting Burnham's soft-left vision for the party.

Despite his popularity, Burnham faces significant challenges. To challenge Starmer, he would need to secure a parliamentary seat, potentially in the Gorton & Denton constituency, currently held by suspended MP Andrew Gwynne. However, this seat is vulnerable to Reform UK, complicating Burnham's path to leadership.

Burnham's interventions in national politics, such as his support for a ceasefire in Gaza and criticism of Starmer's stance, have further strained relations with the party leadership. He has also expressed concerns over Labour's internal processes, particularly regarding the exclusion of left-wing candidates like Jamie Driscoll from mayoral selections.

As Starmer's leadership faces increasing scrutiny, Burnham's actions suggest he is preparing to challenge for the Labour leadership. However, the path to leadership remains complex, requiring both political manoeuvring and electoral success.

Laughable government on all fronts.

UK: Andy Burnham For Next PM?

Probably will be. Starmer is a metaphorical dead man walking .

And he better hurry up, before a certain National Inquiry starts.

Not that he will save Labour getting annihilated at the next GE.

The entire Labour party needs to go and be replaced by Nigel Farage and Reform Party.

Of course he is!

He is as left wing as they come despite his public speech denials!

Left-wing is not communist.  He's a democratic socialist, as Starmer once claimed to be.

What an oxymoronic statement!

No he isn't

Unless  Starmer vacates No. 10 willingly before the next election It could be a very long time indeed before Burnham gets a shot at the premiers job. Lets hope it never happens,

Burnham may well be left-wing but he is not a communist.

Communists reject capitalism and believe in common ownership of the means (and distribution) of production, basically a centrally planned economy. Where has Burnham stated that he rejects capitalism?

As Brewster says, Burnham is a democratic socialist and believes in a mixed economy i.e. that some products and services are best produced by the private sector, others by the public sector.

Re quote that when the Corbynista supporting  member of Corbyn's shadow cabinet becomes the Czar of the UK in a few months time when he topples two tier Starmer!
