Thaksin's Lese Majeste Appeal Deadline Extended

The Court of Appeal has extended the deadline for the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to appeal the lese majeste case against Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra until October 22. Thaksin was acquitted of these charges on August 22, but amid ongoing pressure from activists, the OAG has been granted additional time to prepare their appeal, an extension confirmed on September 22 by the OAG.

Representatives from the People and Student Network for the Reform of Thailand and the Dhamma Team, along with supporters, have urged prosecutors to consider not only the lese majeste charge but also charges related to the Computer Crime Act. The petition, led by Pichit Chaimongkol and Puangtip Boonsanong, was addressed at the OAG's headquarters, emphasising the need to pursue a broader legal strategy against Thaksin.

OAG spokesperson Sakkasem Nisaiyok acknowledged the petition and revealed that the appeal period extension was in place. He mentioned that the petition will be reviewed by the attorney general. Further action is being considered, as various parties are calling for a comprehensive review of the case.

Thaksin's lawyer, Winyat Chartmontree, confirmed the former prime minister has not requested any special treatment or detention outside prison, following visits to Thaksin in Klong Prem Central Prison. Thaksin, reportedly suffering from high blood pressure and stress, has been dealing with chronic health issues but continues to reside in the elderly inmates' ward without special privileges.

On September 19, Thaksin was briefly transferred to the Corrections Hospital for a check-up due to fatigue and body pain. He returned to Klong Prem Prison the same day, with officials stating his condition remains stable despite ongoing health concerns such as cervical spondylosis and anxiety.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Office of the Attorney General has until October 22 to appeal Thaksin’s lese majeste acquittal.
  • Activist groups demand additional charges under the Computer Crime Act.
  • Thaksin remains in standard detention conditions, managing health issues.

People and Student Network for the Reform of Thailand

They do appear to have an awful lot of clout don't they?

Still it is nice to see (mature) students and the common people, traditionally umh, lacking an effective, coherent voice in the Thai political arena, rather coming to the fore!

I look forward to them standing to be the people's choice, on a platform of transparent reform of Thailand, in the election in 3 1/2 months time!

!🫣

They appeal as much as they want, but Mr T will always win... He has the money, and his friend who helped him already

If he always wins why is he in Klong Prem prison? Admittedly the hospital unit, but he is not a free man at this time.

The Thai legal 'system' seems to provide for an endless stream of appeals and reviews. Nothing is ever finalized, even years later.

I guess it keeps the moneybags moving around the system.

Are you following what is going on in Thai politics? Anutin is in for three or four months. Then the election. Peoples Party is going to do very well indeed, and there will be no leadership for Anutin. Have to sweep out the dinosaurs in PT, and BJT, and let the new guard in.

Yes we hope that it will happen, but if you read the news you can see already that there are forces trying to bring the Peoples Party in problems, by accusing them already of all kind things for giving Anutin the PM position. Of course everybody will keep quiet now, but when the elections are done and the Peoples Party is the winner, believe me it will be the same as with Move Forward, they will find things to ban and disable the party... Nothing change in Thailand unless the old guard and army are moved from their power

That is PT and they are a joke. We have two kinds of voters, educated and wanting change. Uneducated and wanting a better life, so will a accept a vote handout. The latter is PT bread and butter, but even they are now disillusioned. Peoples party has an office not only in every province, but also amphur and district. They are out seeing the people.

You are right with your last statement, until the powerful dinosaurs are gone there can be no change. They are going, and will continue to go. One benefit of an "aging society"
